Day 4 and our last day in was yet another stellar experience, honestly if this country is not on your travel horizon then it needs to be added - GREITAI!!!

This morning after our final breakfast (where there may, or may not, have been a farewell Crémant 😉) and it was bags in the bus and onto a very sobering visit of the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (also known as the KGB Museum)

The guide was part of Lithuania’s occupied history and was incredibly transparent about the his experience. It was a very emotional visit for us all but an important one nonetheless.

We then headed out of Vilnius to and learn about the history of the Karaite settlement in Lithuania from the 14th century. After a fabulous lunch of traditional Kybyn (moon shaped mutton filled deliciousness) washed down with some Karaimų trauktinė - a traditional digestive that definitely puts “hairs on your chest” 😂 we walked over to .castle

Reconstructed and restored from it’s 14th century origins, it is now part of the Trakai History Museum and is lovely to wander around. Then we climbed into a boat to take us across the lake (a very popular spot for rowing apparently) to
Once home to the Count Józef Tyszkiewicz and his wife the house, and the stunning gardens that surround it, are a very popular location for weddings - and I can understand why, they are just beautiful 🤩

Then it was back onboard and a sad farewell to Vilnius and Lithuania 🇱🇹

Day 3 in and another amazing day packed with history, culture, and of course food!

We began our day at the palace of the Grand Dukes museum on Cathedral Square, where we took a deep dive into the history of Lithuania, walking around the original foundations of the palace before heading upstairs to the recreated rooms and exhibits containing items retrieved from the area, despite the various periods of occupation and destruction.

What struck me was the determination, passion and pride of the Lithuanian people to preserve and celebrate their heritage and culture.

Then we ventured a little outside the old town to the district to visit the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul and take in the dramatic white on white stucco creations and the dramatic ship chandelier that sails from the alter.

We stopped by the somewhat hidden Church of Christ the Redeemer before walking through the quiet gardens to - restored and reopened in spring 2024.

At times the building has been a noble family residence, a hospital, part of a military complex and now home to loaned contemporary art installations. The juxtaposition of history and modernity tempts visitors from opposite interests to come together and appreciate the other.

Then we enjoyed one of the most unique experiences of the trip, a visit to vin de garage vineyard.

Guided through orchards of newly planted elderberry and the older rowan berry trees, Irma and Giedrius’s passion and enthusiasm for their wines (and the adventure of winemaking) was infectious!

The tasting was wonderfully surprising, with wines that were dry, rounded and still developing as we moved through the vintages. An absolute family run enterprise Geri Metai should definitely be added to your Lithuanian itinerary!

Our second day spent in was just as fabulous as the first!

We started by walking the area known as and this was right up my alley (no pun intended). After Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, the area’s derelict housing attracted artists and students from the nearby Vilnius Academy of Arts creating a vibrant, counter-cultural community. In 1997 residents symbolically declared themselves an independent republic as both a creative protest against the tyranny of Soviet rule and a celebration of artistic freedom. They have their own constitution, which is enshrined on mirrored plaques in over 30 languages along Paupio Street and is well worth a read!

We wandered through the more modern district of to take in the pedestrianised mixed use spaces sitting adjacent to the Vilnelė river.

We wandered back to Cathedral Square before walking along Gedimino St, which closes to cars oat night and on the weekends, incorporating some site visits to hotels on route, which is always incredibly helpful as an agent.

The night was spent sampling more of Vilnius cuisine including the rated restaurant (yum), the bars along Vilnius street and the cosy but pumping for their wickedly good cocktails!

Narutis Hotel & Restaurant. Small Luxury Hotels of the World is a perfect spot to stay in the old town of Vilnius!

It is a 5* family owned hotel located in 15th-16th century buildings in Vilnius Pilies street. In the past, the buildings used to be mansions, which belonged to the noble dynasties at different points in history and the buildings are now nationally preserved architectural monuments.

Decorated in the style of bygone nobility the rooms have all the mod-cons and the staff are ever helpful and attentive.

With just under 50 rooms and suites across 5 floors, the hotel offers a beautiful bar & terrace area, restaurant and spa.

A short walk to both many of the highlights of the old town, which is one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe and the largest Baroque old town in Eastern and Central Europe, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

Loving and

Day 1 -
Arrived at the new Vilnius airport and straight to our hotel perfectly located in the old town.
After a lovely hotel lunch it was out to walk the city.

What struck me initially is how clean and easily walkable the old city is, lots of coffee and cake options and restaurants/bars, so there is definitely a foodie scene here and the flowers, with many bedazzling their street frontages with blooms 🌸🌺🌼

Back to the hotel for a quick catch up on emails and then back out to dinner for some traditional Lithuanian cuisine including pink soup & boar.

We made a stop at the Vilnius to dance with some friends in 🇵🇭🇵🇱🇧🇷🇬🇧🇺🇸🇮🇪 before hitting the hay after many many steps!

Lovely villa, fantastic food, too many libations, lots of long walks, a smattering of culture and many many many laughs!
