🤗When Facebook shares your memories….

5 years ago today, we were visiting the stunning Flinders Ranges. We had an even more basic set up back then believe it or not, as we explored the tracks and stunning scenery.

This photo was taken after a morning drive around some tracks. We got hungry so we pulled out our small esky and ate some cheese and crackers whilst sitting on an old tree log. 😂

We were happy and loved every minute of it, as we said cheers with a beer in hand, with the ranges as our backdrop.

It shows you don’t need all the flashy things to hit the road and explore. You just need a vehicle, a place to rest your head and the love of exploring some beautiful places. 🤙

📍Glenelg Art Murals, SA

This one would have to be one of my favourites 💙

Walking along Jetty Road, we came across this massive mural on the side wall of Dymocks Bookstore Glenelg, and it’s such a fun one.

It’s packed full of well-known book characters, so you can’t help but stop and try to spot them all. A whole world of imagination flows out from an open book, and the longer you look, the more details you notice 📚✨

The mural was commissioned by Dymocks Glenelg and painted by Chris Dallwitz, bringing together memories, dreams and favourite stories from childhood.

We loved spotting characters we grew up with like Spot the Dog, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Meg and Mog, Miffy and Grug, and there are plenty more hidden in there too.

It’s one of those murals that gave us a smile, made us laugh, and really appreciate the effort that’s gone into it.

If you’re wandering along Jetty Road, this one is definitely worth a look 💙🎨

Our next art mural spotting was right on Jetty Road, on the corner of Jetty Road and Jetty Street, and this one is huge. You can’t miss it!

📍 Location: Angle Hair Spa and Beauty
🎨 Artist: Toy Soldier Crew

Covering the entire wall of the salon, this eye-catching mural dives straight under the sea.
There’s a mermaid, a treasure chest, a crab and other sea creatures, all contrasted by a robot trying to chain everything up. With the Toy Soldier Crew logo front and centre, the artwork feels like an active hive of metal, water and hidden treasure.

Another great reminder that Jetty Road isn’t just about shopping and cafés… there’s some seriously cool street art hiding in plain sight 🎨✨

📍Glenelg Art Murals, SA

The other week, John and I headed down to Glenelg for lunch at the Colley Hotel on Jetty Road.
If you’ve visited Glenelg before, you’ll know Jetty Road is the main strip, full of shops, eateries and clothing stores. But did you know it’s also home to some great street art? 🎨

We hadn’t realised just how many murals there were, so over the week we thought we’d share a few we spotted while wandering around.

Starting with these two 👇

📍 Location: Beach Burrito Co., Jetty Road, Glenelg
🎨 Artist: Vans the Omega
🗓 Completed: 30 March 2016
This artwork was commissioned by Beach Burrito Co. and installed by Vans the Omega as part of a live art performance during a laneway street party back in 2016. Such a bold and eye-catching piece tucked just off the main strip.

📍 Location: Espresso Cucina Dolce, Sussex Street (just off Jetty Road)
🎨 Artist: Unknown
This one is small but super cute, featuring a coffee cup, almonds, a spoon and a pear amongst other items, perfectly reflecting the café it’s painted on. A lovely little detail you could easily walk past if you weren’t looking.

🍨The Coffee Barn Gelateria Moonta, SA

To finish off our trip around the Moonta area on the last day, we stopped in for gelato at this great little spot and clearly we weren’t the only ones with the same idea! On a hot day, there were plenty of people streaming in for something cold and sweet.

There were so many great flavours to choose from that we all went a double scoop (no regrets 😄) and sat inside to cool down. It’s a really fun little setup just out of town, with lots to look at inside while you enjoy your treat.

They make artisan gelato and sorbets fresh on site, and if gelato isn’t your thing, they also offer coffee, tea and other treats like pancakes and waffles.

Outside there’s a seating area and a small garden to wander through which is quirky, interesting and definitely worth a look.

A perfect stop for a sweet treat and a relaxed way to wrap up our time in the area.

📍Magazine Bay, Wallaroo, SA

It wasn’t until after we walked out to the ruins and made our way back to the carpark that we actually stopped to read the sign, and there it was, some really interesting information about the old Powder Magazine. It was great to finally put some context to what we’d just explored on foot.

The area itself isn’t the prettiest beach you’ll ever see, but it’s definitely a fascinating stop. Lots of native plants, plenty of wildlife around (although we didn't spot any), and meaningful connections to the Narungga people, which adds another layer of importance to the site.

Not a polished tourist spot by any means, but absolutely worth the visit if you enjoy history and places with a story to tell.

📍Powder Magazine Ruin, Wallaroo, SA

This spot popped up on Google Maps while we were planning our trip, and it turned into one of those “why not go have a look?” moments.

Getting there was a bit of a mission. We drove out to the Magazine Bay lookout thinking we could drive all the way in… turns out, not quite. We hit a carpark with boulders blocking what looked like an old sandy 4WD track.

It was hot, late in the afternoon, and I was ready to turn back, but Dad and my very excited 8-year-old nephew were keen, so off we went.

The walk took about 15 minutes one way. Sandy in parts, a couple of small hills, but nothing too bad. And then the ruins appeared.

It’s pretty obvious the site hasn’t been looked after with graffiti and rubbish around, which is such a shame considering the history, but it was still really interesting to explore. The views were great, and we had a lot of fun wandering around the structure and checking out the surrounds.

There was an information sign we discovered when returning to our car at the beginning of the walking track. This gave a snap shot of the history of the Powder Magazine which was interesting to read.

🔹Power Magazine History🔹
The Old Powder Magazine at Magazine Bay, Wallaroo was built in 1867 to safely store large quantities of gunpowder needed for blasting in the Wallaroo and Moonta mines.

The first shipment of gunpowder arrived on 27 April 1867 aboard the schooner Eclipse, delivering supplies for both mines. A stone jetty was used for unloading and a dedicated keeper was responsible for overseeing the storage and safety of the explosives.

Over time, the magazine gained a reputation due to various incidents, including explosions, transport robberies, and illegal shipments. When mining operations in the area closed in 1923, the need for gunpowder storage ended.

Sometimes the unplanned stops turn out to be the best ones 😊

🔹Have you visited the Powder Magazine before?
🔹Do you know about the history of this landmark?

🎨 Wallaroo Art, South Australia

Wallaroo has some pretty great art murals and even a couple of sculptures, scattered around the town. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite have the time to track them all down on this visit, as the weather was starting to turn and it was getting late.

We did, however, manage to photograph two murals and also drove past the impressive Wallaroo Heritage Mural, which stretches an incredible 40 metres in length! It looked absolutely amazing, and we’d love to return one day and photograph each section properly.

In the meantime, here are the two murals we discovered 👇

🖌️ Wildman Street Jetty Images Mural
Artists: John Turpie & Sir Grava
Painted in 1999 with help from local artists and Year 7 students from Kadina, Wallaroo & Moonta Primary Schools, this mural tells the story of Wallaroo’s past. It features the Wall family (who once lived near the mural site), the ladies rowing club, the jetty, sailing ships, and historic foreshore buildings.

⚓ Jones Street Jetty & Tall Ship Mural
Artists: Sir Grava & John Turpie
Also painted in 1999, this large mural covers the side wall of a shop and was created with assistance from local artists. Funding came from the YP Living Artists Group and the (then) Copper Coast Council. It’s a fantastic tribute to Wallaroo’s maritime history.

Clearly, we’ll need to plan another visit, preferably with better weather and more time because Wallaroo’s art scene deserves a proper wander . We also want to come back at night and watch the interactive silo art display! Now that would be pretty specie!

🎨 Kadina Art, South Australia 🎨
There are some lovelyl murals scattered throughout the Kadina township, and we’ve enjoyed discovering them over multiple visits. When we visited about a year ago, we spotted a few and snapped some photos. On our most recent trip, we found a couple more to add to our little collection . Check them out...

🌊 Blue Wave & Dolphin Mural – Artist: Nicky Create
Located on the side wall of Copper Coast Surf, this vibrant wave and dolphin mural feels perfectly at home on a surf shop. Bold, fun and full of movement.

💎 Kadina Jewellers Mural – Artist: Nicky Create
Created in 2019, this stunning mural stretches along a 20-metre side wall. It took about a week to complete and was almost entirely hand-painted by the artist herself. Such incredible talent!

🎭 The Cracked Pepper Café Mural
This large fence and wall mural is full of cute and quirky characters. It’s the kind of artwork where both kids and adults will enjoy spotting all the little details — like stepping into a fairytale.

✨ Water Tower Art – Artist: Resio
Unveiled in October 2018, this striking artwork pays tribute to Kadina’s rich Cornish history and its strong connection to copper mining. One side features a young maypole girl holding symbols of copper and wheat, representing the industries that shaped the region. On the other side, a steam engine honours the historic rail line that once ran alongside the water tower and supported the local community.

If you’re visiting Kadina, take a wander around town and keep your eyes open for these murals!

🍻 Bond Store, Wallaroo, SA

This brewery has been on our list for a little while now, so I was excited to finally tick it off. John sadly wasn’t on this trip with me, so Dad stepped in and joined me for a paddle instead!

The first thing we noticed was the wonderful service and genuine hospitality. We didn’t have a booking and it was busy when we arrived, but they still managed to find us a spot which was much appreciated. We would highly recommend booking to ensure you don't miss out!

One thing that really stood out was that everything is table service, which is a bit different for a brewery. Usually you’re up at the bar checking out the taps and menu, but this was a nice change and worked really well given how popular the venue is.

The menu is pretty extensive, with 12 beers brewed on site, so you’re almost guaranteed to find something you like. It’s also a distillery, so there’s plenty more to sample beyond beer. We noticed another area downstairs with a cocktail bar showcasing their gins and liqueurs which is pretty cool!

Anyway… back to the beers 🍺

Dad and I both went with paddles to try a range.
I sampled Beach Ale, Your Mate Mid, Crisp Lager and Gone Fishing with my favourites being the Crisp Lager and Your Mate Mid.
Dad chose the pre-selected Beer Lovers Paddle, and funnily enough, the Crisp Lager was his favourite too. Like father, like daughter! 🤣

Like many breweries, the vats are on display, and the building itself is a renovated 150-year-old bonded warehouse, full of character and history. The food looked great too, although we’d already eaten earlier in the day. I will now have to bring John back here and try the food and have another pint!

All in all, Bond Store is well worth a visit, great venue, good beers, and plenty to try if gin is your thing as well.

Cheers🍻
