πŸ₯©πŸ”” Incredible Italian style steak house discovery ...
Komatsuya sells top shelf Japanese beef, prepared Italian style as part of its classic Italian menu.

Select your steak from the butcher style display at the front, and take a seat for the classic Italian hospitality and menu.

Japanese chefs and restaurants deliver some of the best dining in any category in the world, so Italian, French, Mexican and more should be on your radar, as well as traditional local styles.

We had a 365gm Black Wagyu steak for less than Au$60! This steak at home would be $200 at any decent steak house at home. Paired with other classic Italian dishes, and a glass or two of Italian wine, is a great way to experience top Japanese beef.

πŸ§‚πŸŽŒ Some of the best experiences aren't planned....
When visiting Tokyo Skytree, we came across this beautiful store selling flavoured salts.
They offer around an hour long experience where you get to taste different raw and infused salts and make your own blend. It's a fascinating journey for any food lover.
Book a timeslot before you go up the tower to avoid waiting.

A must do experience which is both fun, and educational. And you get a unique souvenir and a great story!

🍒🍺 Is this the FUNNEST way to eat in Japan.....?
After work drinks or catching up with friends?
Chances are you're going to a Yokocho.
Tiny bars packed together.
Six stools, one grill. Small speciality dishes, perfected over decades.
This is where friends meet to catch up and share a bite.
Careers are made here. Boss and junior, elbow to elbow over plate of yakitori for nomikai, or after work drinks.
You move through the counters choosing a dish here and a drink there.
Every city, no matter how small, has at least one. Worth seeking out on your trip to Japan.

Tokyo's kitchenware district hides a secret...
Kappabashi Dori is named for the Kappa, a mischievous water spirit who serves as a tale all over Japan to keep children away from dangerous waterways.
Spill the water from the bowl on his head, and he freezes, or.... offer a cucumber with your family name on it for protection.

Kappabashi is a must visit for any chef or keen home cook. Everything from restaurant equipment, to fine ceramics is available, and most at industry prices.

πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ›οΈ Japan's hidden, fascinating, banking secret ....

πŸ₯’ πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ A sign you're in a good tonkatsu restaurant is the bowl when you sit down. More traditional tonkatsu (pork cutlet) places provide a textured suribachi, a ceramic bowl with a textured, unglazed interior, filled with sesame seeds, which you grind with a wooden pestle, and mix with the rich tonkatsu sauce.

The typical meal set when eating tonkatsu consists of the cutlet, a generous serve of cabbage salad, rice and miso soup. Condiments include mustard, tonkatsu sauces, which are a fruity BBQ style sauce, and various types of salt.

Follow for our full post this week about our meal at the venue in this reel.

Here's a lesser known, definite must eat in japan......
While stories of $400 melons, $250 bunches of grapes and $35 apples are well known, the quality of all fruits, at every level, is outstanding.

Peaches are a particular standout, with Japanese producers growing over 100 different types. In two broad categories of white, softer and sweeter, and yellow, more tart and fragrant, the aroma and flavour of all peaches here are clear and distinct. In season from mid-june to September, picking up a couple on your trip is an essential part of experiencing Japanese food.

We bought a white one, and it was a highlight of everything we ate on our latest recon trip. Still thinking about that peach now!!

Visit Sun Fruits in the Basement 1 floor of Midtown Galleria - Roppongi, for a premium selection which includes white strawberries and box shaped watermelons, or just buy from any fruit shop. You cant go wrong with fruit in Japan!

It was just so good I had to order another serving..... instead of dessert!
Chef Takeo Kiyomiya runs the kitchen and service at his restaurant Okinaya, in Setagaya, single handed. The intensity he brings to the work, while remaining warm and friendly with all guests, is amazing.
The Italian style menu includes, among other dishes, house-made prosciutto, four cheese risotto, fresh salads and the incredible dish posted here, made with toasted bread, pate, gorgonzola cream, cherry compote and brΓ»lΓ©e figs.
Full meal review coming soon.
A short ride on the unique tram-like mini train on the Tokyu Setagya line from Sangenjaya Station, the restaurant is located in an area known for excellent speciality restaurants and coffee houses, and is close to Gotokuji temple (home of the lucky waving cat).
An off-the-tourist-trail, must visit area!

We love these sweets baked beeswax lined tins!! ....
Maison Kayser on the basement floor of Tokyo Midtown Galleria offers superb baked goods..... Our favourite? The canelΓ©. A small pastry, originating in Bordeaux, that has a caramelised exterior that is both crunchy and sticks to the teeth. These ones are the best we've had, including ones in France!!
Next door is Sunfruits, a crazy fruit shop selling $200 bunches of grapes, and $50 peaches, and two doors down is Kayanoya, a dashi and traditional condiments shop. Head down to B1 at Midtown Galleria for a quality Tokyo food experience.
