How Many Days Do You Need at Cradle Mountain?
It’s a question we’re asked again and again—and there’s no easy answer. Even after years of guiding visitors at Cradle Mountain, there are always new walks and places to discover. You could spend weeks here!
For most travellers, though, time in Tasmania is limited. So how long should you allow?
One day: Absolutely worth it. Arrive early and plan ahead. Take the shuttle to Dove Lake, walk the spectacular 6 km Dove Lake Circuit, and if time allows explore Weindorfers Forest and historic Waldheim Chalet.
Two days: Our sweet spot for most travellers. You’ll have time to explore beyond Dove Lake, enjoy early-morning or late-afternoon wildlife—including wombats—and have a second chance if Cradle Mountain’s famously unpredictable weather hides the views on day one.
Three days: Best for keen hikers. Add longer walks such as Marion’s Lookout or Hanson’s Peak, or allow a full day for the challenging Cradle Mountain summit when conditions are suitable.
The Overland Track: That’s another adventure altogether! Allow around six days, or longer if adding side trips and rest days.
And you don’t have to be a hiker to enjoy Cradle Mountain. The shuttle takes you into the heart of the park, where simply sitting at Dove Lake and taking in the scenery can be an experience in itself.
Our recommendation? Two nights and two full days for most visitors; three days if you love hiking. And always give Tasmania’s alpine weather the final say.
