Staying safe on the road is important, but keeping you safe online and over the phone matters just as much to the Driving Miss Daisy Grafton team. 🚙🌼
We know our wonderful clients are being heavily targeted by increasingly clever scammers with fraudsters using text messages, emails, and phone calls to impersonate trusted agencies like the NDIS myGov, and My Aged Care.
Here are the most common tricks Scamwatch is tracking right now, and how you can protect your information.
* The NDIS "Bank Details"
Scammers send fake messages that look exactly like the NDIS. They ask you to click a link to "verify your details" or update your bank account. The NDIS will never ask you to update financial details via a link in an email or text.
* The "Urgent Debt" Threat: You may receive a phone call claiming your NDIS plan or aged care package has a debt. They often threaten that your services will be cancelled unless you pay immediately. Government agencies will never threaten you or demand immediate payment over the phone.
* The Fake Aged Care Assessor: Some scammers are calling or showing up at doors pretending to be from My Aged Care. Legitimate assessors always book appointments in advance and carry physical photo identification.
* The "Grandparent" Emergency SMS: A text message from an unknown number claiming to be your grandchild who has lost their phone and urgently needs money.
Scamwatch Australia recommends three simple steps to keep your data secure:
1. STOP: Don't give out personal information, passwords, or banking codes right away. Take a breath. If a caller is pressuring you or creating a sense of urgency, that is a major red flag
2. CHECK: Never click on links sent in unexpected text messages or emails. If you want to check if a message is real, log into your official account via the MyGov website or app.
3. PROTECT: If you suspect something is wrong, hang up the phone or delete the message immediately.
