Bento Bits

Bento Bits At Bento Bits we aim to help parents make real fresh food fun for kids of all ages. For our products Then I discovered Bento!

As the mother of a toddler that didn't eat sandwiches, I found myself creatively challenged when it came to preparing lunches for her that she would actually eat. Bento is the Japanese art of packing appealing lunches. Although some are very elaborate, they don't have to be. Dividers and Food Cups are often used to present the food in a way that looks appetizing and to stop it from getting jumbled

up in transport. A Bento for an Austrailan child is probably very different to a traditional Japanese Bento. But we can still get inspiration from the style that is traditionally used but use foods that we are more familiar with. If you create sections within the lunchbox, it looks neater and more appetizing. You can do so by purchasing a special lunchbox or you could use food cups and dividers which give you a little more flexibility. A great way to start is by buying a set of silicone muffin cups and using them to create smaller sections within the lunchbox. By cutting down on individually packaged convenient foods you don't only help save our environment, you also help save your budget. Bento Bits sells kitchenware that helps you create lunches that look yummy and exciting. They can be very useful when dealing with fussy eaters. I will also be sharing tips, tricks and ideas with you.

I haven't posted in ages. My kids have been taking turns at being sick for much of this term including a dash to the hospital due to my daughter's pneumonia. While she's been back at school the last 2 weeks, my son has been home keeping me company.
It also doesn't help that my kids have been requesting lunches that aren't really all that appropriate for a bento style lunch page. Like this one, my daughter's (and husband's) new favourite based on an episode of Jamie's 30 minute meals I've watched recently. It's Turkish bread filled with a mixture of char grilled capsicum, olives, gherkins, sundried tomatoes, capers, fresh basil, a little olive oil, Parmesan cheese, Salami and some mixed lettuce.
The first time my daughter took that to school she apparently said to her friend: "i have no idea what this is but it's delicious". Her friend told her that it looks a bit like subway. so now, even though she's never been to subway, my daughter requests a subway sandwich sometimes.

I just realised that I never posted the other cakes I made over the holidays, Here's a superhero one for a friend's little boy. Guess how old he turned. This cake was massive and quite labour intensive but a lot of fun to make.

We've been getting up too late every single morning this week so lunches were quickly thrown together. No cutesy stuff. I really should get myself organised and do them the night before.
We still made it to school on time every day though. Only just.
Today the kids got a chicken drumstick from the freezer, corn, carrot, celery and strawberries and also an apple for morning tea.

No lunches to pack due to school holidays. It's nice to have a break.
So instead I've been making cakes. Here's an Elsa cake I made for a friend's little girl. It was a big success. And fun to make.
The cape is made from toffee. Instructions in the comments.

Last day of the term. Can you believe we're half way through the year already? Where has the time gone?
To celebrate their great efforts during the first semester, my kids got a lunch filled with some of their favourites. Baked beans in our little cat and fish boxes, mini tuna sushi, corn, capsicum, a strawberry and my son also got edamame (my daughter doesn't like them). Due to popular demand apples and oranges for morning tea.

Yay! Both kids are healthy enough to be back at school today!
Their lunches today are half a butter and honey sandwich, mini capsicums from the garden filled with cream cheese, a devilled egg (yolks taken out, mixed with mayo and salt, filled and both halves put back together) and a few strawberries. Morning tea is half an apple and half an orange. it's a good combination as the orange stops the apple from going brown.

Is anybody interested in a pre-order of stainless steel products like these great insulated containers that make it easy to pack hot lunches in winter?

Today's lunch isn't cute but still reasonably healthy. Sickness is still going around in this house and it was another night of very broken sleep. This tired mama found it very hard to get out of bed so lunch prep was rushed. It's a miserable day here so my son got leftover pea and ham soup (even though he said last night that it looks like frog vomit but tastes good) in a thermos, a cinnamon donut, grapes and strawberries, a banana and rooibos tea with milk in his bottle.

Yesterday I had both kids home sick. One child is back at school today but Miss 8 is still home sick. So again i only had to do one lunch (aside from the one for the biggest child 😉).
Mr almost 6 got Octodogs, home made tomato sauce, mini capsicums that he picked from our very neglected veggie patch, cucumber slices and strawberries.

I had to laugh about this one. Have your kids ever done anything like this?
My son recently wrote his name on his grandparents' wall. Then he denied that he did it.
If you're going to deny it, don't sign your work!!!

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!!!

Just thought I'd share an observation here that i made a few weeks ago and that i found fascinating.

I've always said that while my kids eat very healthy, they are not big eaters.
Their diet focuses on protein and good fats and moderate amounts of minimally processed carbs.
A couple of weeks ago i had no time to make their lunch so they got to choose their tuckshop lunch. One wanted lasagne and garlic bread, the other pizza and garlic bread. Morning tea was a yoghurt tub and for breakfast all we had time for was toast. So all very heavy on the processed carbs. I thought they chose way too much for their lunch. They usually wouldn't eat that much.
However they both came home STARVING even though they had eaten everything! When at other times they might not even finish their lunchboxes.

If you feel that you have to pack huge amounts of food to fill your child up, try upping the protein and fats rather than the carbs. They really are way more filling.
