Tucked away among the busy streets and apartments of modern Sydney sits an extraordinary reminder of a time long ago.........

🏛 ELIZABETH BAY HOUSE - 1839 ~ "the finest house in the colony"

Constructed in 1839 for Colonial Secretary Alexander Macleay and his family it is an elegant time piece of Sydney's past.

It's views of the harbour, sweeping staircase and grand architecture tell the story of wealth and ambition in Colonial Sydney and when you step inside it isn't hard to imagine why it was named "the finest house in the colony"

Unfortunately, the Macleay Family's grand lifestyle eventually collided with financial difficulties, and the enormous estate was subdivided as Sydney grew around it.

Today, Elizabeth Bay House stands almost hidden within the city that developed beyond its doors.

Places like Elizabeth Bay House allow us to walk through rooms where people lived almost two centuries ago, notice the craftsmanship that survived, learn the stories of the people who live there, and better understand just how Sydney became the city we all know today.

Sometimes the most amazing stories are hiding in plain sight!

🚂 JUNEE, NSW — MORE THAN A STOP ALONG THE WAY ❤️

There’s something special about a town like Junee.

Nestled in the Riverina region of NSW, Junee grew around the railway, becoming an important railway centre from the late 1800s. The arrival of the railway helped shape the town we see today — bringing workers, families, businesses and travellers, and leaving behind a remarkable collection of railways, architectural and community heritage.

But Junee isn't simply a town with an interesting past.

It is a living community with a future worth supporting.

On my recent visit, I spent time exploring the streets, photographing beautiful old buildings, visiting local businesses and talking with some of the people who call Junee home.

And it reminded me of something incredibly important.

When we travel through rural and regional Australia, the money we spend matters.

☕ That coffee from the local café matters.
🍽️ That meal at the pub matters
🛏️ That night in locally owned accommodation matters.
🎁 That souvenir from a museum or small business matters.
🎟️ That admission ticket to a local attraction matters

Individually, they might seem like small purchases.

Collectively, they help support jobs, preserve heritage, keep businesses open and give communities another reason to keep investing in their town.

Too often we drive through regional towns on our way to somewhere else.

Maybe sometimes we need to make the town itself the destination.

Walk the main street.

Visit the museum.

Photograph the old buildings.

Ask a local what you shouldn't leave without seeing.

Buy something from the little shop you would normally walk past.

Stay the night instead of continuing down the highway.

Because preserving Australia's heritage isn't only about saving old buildings.

It's also about supporting the communities that continue to care for them.

Junee has stories everywhere you look — in its railway heritage, historic pubs and buildings, local businesses and, most importantly, its people.

Visit regional. Stay local. Spend local. Ask questions. Listen to the stories.

Because sometimes the places we nearly pass by are the places most worth stopping for.

Keep our history alive 🏛️🗝️📜❤️

The Fort is open six days a week (closed Tuesdays), Volunteers are made to feel very welcome, uniform is supplied and all training. The rosters for Guides or the Kiosk are very flexible. Please consider volunteering, it is not only a great place to spend a couple of days each month, but you are contributing to the preservation of an important part of Newcastle's history.

🤗❤️ **A little ARGUS Tourism update...** 🤗❤️

Sometimes the biggest milestones begin with a single conversation.

Today I received some exciting news that has me doing a little Happy Dance! 🎉😁

After months of research, travelling, photographing heritage sites, designing products and preparing proposals, ARGUS Tourism has taken a very exciting step forward.

Nothing is official just yet, so I can't share all the details... but let's just say that a heritage organisation has shown genuine interest, and I'm incredibly excited about what could be coming next.

This is exactly why ARGUS Tourism was created—to help tell Australia's stories, support our incredible heritage sites, and inspire the next generation to explore them.

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged and supported me along the way. This feels like the beginning of something very special.
