Liverpool

170 years ago! ON THIS DAY
1 September 1856, Liverpool celebrated the commencement of regular rail services between Sydney and Liverpool with a public holiday for its residents. The Sydney Morning Herald reported "The whole township assumed an unusually gay and busy appearance" as the "iron horse entered with glorious speed the quiet town of Liverpool".

There were six services a day commencing at 6.00 am. In addition, an express train was laid on to undertake the journey which took only 45 minutes. The average time for services were between 60 and 72 minutes.

The Empire reported that "The number of passengers conveyed during the day between Sydney and Liverpool and from various intermediate stations to the latter place was four hundred". (Photo is of the first Liverpool Railway station in 1876).
