I almost didn’t post this but here’s the thing about vulnerability - sitting on it doesn’t make it easier 😅

Most people who struggle with external validation were praised for their achievements as a child 🥇

That’s not my story 👎🏻 ❌

I was the top student in my class at college. And I was completely uncomfortable about it 😫

This reel is about my complicated relationship with success, why it felt like rejection, and the shadow work I had to do to untangle it 👩‍🎓

If any of this resonates, drop a comment below — I’d love to know I’m not alone in this one ⬇️

When I was a FitPro, on Wednesday nights after teaching three back-to-back classes in Nottingham, my husband would pick me up for the drive home to Derbyshire 🏡

And every Wednesday night, I’d brace myself before getting in the car 🚗

Because I knew what his first question would be:

“How many did you get?”

It would trigger me every single time 😩

And, I want you to know: this isn’t about my husband. Literally ANYONE could’ve asked me that question and I’d have felt the same way. A client. A friend. A colleague. It didn’t matter!

Because what it was triggering wasn’t my evening. It was my self-worth 🤔

Here’s the plot twist though: those Wednesday night clients paid me a monthly fee. I got paid EXACTLY the same amount - whether two people showed up or twenty! 🤷‍♀️

But somewhere along the way I’d built up a belief that my classes had to be busy for me to be worthy 🤗

On those quieter nights, when someone innocently asked how many showed up, something in me would quietly panic. I’d lie and round the number up. I’d make it sound better than it actually was. I’d do whatever I needed to do to avoid feeling like a failure ❌

Not to impress anyone. To PROTECT myself from feeling like I wasn’t enough 🦺

If you’re a fitness instructor and you’ve ever felt your mood rise and fall with your class numbers, your booking rates, or your retention — I want you to know that I see you 👀

I’ve been there. Standing in a church hall with two clients, going through the motions, whilst quietly and deeply worrying about what it said about me that more people hadn’t shown up 🗣️

It was never a business problem. It was never a marketing problem. It was never a teaching problem. It was never even a class problem…

It was a self-worth problem 😧

External validation is a coping mechanism. But it’s rarely the only one 😫

When you start to release your need for external validation, something else will often move in to fill the void — and it helps to know what to look out for 🍿

In this reel I’m walking through the 5 categories of coping mechanisms, because AWARENESS is always the first step 😉

Which one resonated most with you? Let me know in the comments, and if you have any questions about how I can help you, send me a DM 👍🏻

Self-care can support you externally. but self-worth has to come FROM you, internally 🙏

Went to my mum’s local Community Centre yesterday and sewed a “Boomerang Bag” on the sewing machine. It was so fun! 🤩

The bags cost $2 for customers to buy, and the sewing group get to choose which charity they donate the monies to (the last $1,000 went to buy extra breast pumps for the neonatal unit at the local hospital) 🥹

All of the fabric is donated for free; there’s hardly any waste; and the bags are made by volunteers who range from complete beginners to experienced tailors! 🪡

It was really lovely to be a part of the group all working towards a common goal together, and I left feeling warm and fuzzy after being able to put my skills from a hobby to use, for something really charitable 🧵
