There is breakfast and then there is breakfast….so what do you expect for breakfast in Italy ?
Breakfast in Italy is usually simple, sweet and fairly light. The traditional Italian breakfast is called “la colazione”.
What do Italians eat for breakfast?
1. Cappuccino and a croissant or cake This is the classic Italian breakfast. Italians often have a cappuccino with a pastry called a “cornetto”. It looks like a croissant but is usually softer and sweeter. It may be filled with chocolate, custard or jam.
2. Coffee and pastries Many Italians stop at a local café, called a “bar”, on their way to work. They have an espresso and a pastry, often standing at the counter.
3. Breakfast at home At home, Italians might eat biscuits, toast with jam, cereal, yoghurt or a simple pastry. They usually have coffee, milk or a milky coffee with their breakfast.
4. Hotel breakfasts If you are staying in a hotel, you may find a buffet with croissants, bread, jam, yoghurt, fruit, cereal, cheese, ham and sometimes eggs or bacon. The selection depends on the hotel and rating of hotel
5. Regional specialities Different parts of Italy have their own breakfast treats. In Naples, you might find a delicious sfogliatella pastry. In Sicily, a popular summer breakfast is brioche with granita, a refreshing semi-frozen dessert.
A few things to know before travelling:
Breakfast is generally much smaller than an Australian breakfast.
Cappuccino is traditionally a morning drink. Italians usually drink espresso after lunch or dinner.
Ordering a latte will generally get you a glass of milk. Ask for a “caffè latte” if you want coffee with milk.
Coffee and a pastry can cost around €2.50–€5, although tourist areas can be more expensive.
Some cafés charge extra for sitting at a table rather than standing at the counter.
If you prefer a big savoury breakfast with eggs, bacon and toast, look for a hotel buffet or a brunch café, particularly in larger cities.
My recommendation: Start your first morning in Italy with a cappuccino and a warm cornetto filled with custard or chocolate at a local café. It is a lovely way to experience everyday Italian life.
