Day out in Daylesford today, it was a great drive and very friendly people. Highly recommend visiting if you haven't already.
Nestled in the heart of Victoria’s spa country, Daylesford is one of Australia’s most charming regional destinations. Originally home to the Dja Dja Wurrung people, the area transformed during the Victorian Gold Rush when gold was discovered in 1851. The township was officially surveyed in 1854 and quickly grew into a bustling mining centre. As the gold began to run out, Daylesford found a new identity through its natural mineral springs, becoming a renowned spa and wellness destination that still attracts visitors today. The town’s rich history can be seen in its grand 19th-century buildings, beautiful gardens, and strong Swiss-Italian heritage that helped shape the region.
Today, Daylesford is known for its relaxing atmosphere, boutique accommodation, award-winning food and wine, mineral springs, and stunning scenery. Often referred to as Australia's spa capital, it offers the perfect blend of history, luxury, and country charm.
For visitors travelling from Melbourne, the fastest drive is generally via the Western Freeway (M8) through Ballan before heading north into Daylesford, with a travel time of around 90 minutes depending on traffic. Another scenic route follows the Calder Freeway through Woodend and Trentham before arriving in Daylesford.
Along the way, travellers can explore a number of beautiful country towns including Woodend, Trentham, Ballan, and Creswick. Nearby destinations worth visiting while in the region include Hepburn Springs, famous for its mineral baths, Clunes with its beautifully preserved gold-rush streetscape, and Castlemaine, another historic goldfields town rich in art, culture, and heritage.
Whether you're seeking relaxation, history, fine dining, or a scenic country escape, Daylesford offers an unforgettable experience just a short drive from Melbourne.
