When this photo was taken, we were all talking about how beautiful the rainbow was. Little did we know that 20 minutes later, at 5:30 pm on Saturday, all hell was going to break loose with the weather.
We had literally just pulled up with a 5.5-tonne truck fully loaded. What should’ve been a very quick unload instantly turned chaotic as the storm hit, turning the entire street into a rushing river and making it impossible to get the truck anywhere near the entrance. We had to put a Plan B in place immediately.
There were no ifs, buts, or maybes. James’s entire life was sitting in the back of that truck, and our job was to get him settled into his new home. Along with the entire house, we had 200 boxes of books to unload, and our professional unpackers on-site waiting to style the place so it felt like a luxury hotel before he walked through the door, so we found another gear and we worked tirelessly until midnight to get them settled into his new home.
Here are the three big takeaways from an unforgettable night:
1. Our team is unmatched. Soaked to the skin, freezing cold, and facing slippery conditions, not a single person complained not once not ever. Georgia and Monica had put so much care into packing those 200 boxes of books, and we were never going to let that hard work get compromised. We adapted our plan on the spot, spending hours carefully relaying everything so not a single drop of water touched a box or a piece of furniture.
2. Respecting the building matters. When rain is that heavy and equipment gets dragged through mud, you cannot simply roll it through an apartment complex. Common areas deserve the exact same care and respect as the inside of a home. Residents walk through those hallways every day, so trampling dirty water through carpets is completely out of the question. If protecting the building means carrying items individually by hand, that is what you do.
3. Community spirit and zero excuses. To every neighbour who stopped in the pouring rain to ask if we needed a hand, hot drinks, or anything at all, thank you.
Finishing that late at night and then to hear James describe our operation as "like a military training exercise" made every bit of effort worth it, and seeing his glowing review land just 20 minutes after we left was the ultimate reward.
