Why is the nautical mile the absolute unit of measurement in navigation?
In the world of maritime and aviation navigation, there is no place for arbitrary measurements. When planning to cross an ocean or maneuver into a port, using the statute mile is not only insufficient but can also be misleading. The nautical mile is based on precise geometric and geographical principles, making it the ideal tool for this field.

- The nautical mile is not an arbitrary unit; it is derived from the shape of the Earth:

Since one degree of latitude is divided into 60 arc minutes, sailing 60 nautical miles north or south means changing the latitude by one degree.

officers use the formula:
"Distance (miles) = Speed (knots) × Time (hours)."

To help estimate distances or deviation errors,
remember that an object travels a distance in nautical miles equal to its speed in knots divided by 60 in one minute.
