According to international travel rules, pets should be microchipped before their rabies vaccination.

If the rabies vaccine is given before the microchip, it might not be considered valid for travel, which could prevent the animal from entering most countries. This can be one of the more common reasons pets are denied entry or travel permissions.

This is a question our clients ask regularly, and understanding the travel requirements early helps you stay focused and avoid last-minute issues.

For many routes, your pet’s journey is less of a quick vet visit and more of a mini project plan. In the correct order, you may need:

- Microchip in place
- Rabies vaccine (or booster)
- Sometimes a rabies blood test, with a waiting period
- An official health certificate within a very specific window before you fly

If you miss dates or steps are done in the wrong order, you risk delays, refusal to board or quarantine at the other end.

Our rule of thumb is simple. As soon as you know where you are going and roughly when, ask yourself:

“If we start this week, what is the earliest date my pet could legally travel?”

If you would like help working out the exact dates and steps for your pet, you can book a consultation at tailsintransit.co.

When your pet is family, travelling without them simply isn’t an option.

The forms, airline rules and tight timelines can be overwhelming – especially when you’re trying to juggle work, kids, packing and saying your goodbyes. One mistake on a health certificate or permit, and your pet’s trip can be delayed or even refused at check-in.

That’s where Tails in Transit steps in.

Here’s what we handle for you:
• Import and export permits and paperwork, matched to your route and airline
• Health certificates and vet appointments, timed to meet entry requirements
• Airline compliance checks (crates, routing, temperature and breed restrictions)
• Guidance on what your pet needs before, during and after travel
• Trusted boarding at Animal Medical Group (Nassau, The Bahamas only) when your home or hotel isn’t ready

At present, our service is focused on pet travel compliance and vet care – not ground transport to or from airports. We’re happy to work alongside your preferred pet transport company.

Planning pet travel – next week or six months from now – we’ll help you get their paperwork sorted.
