If you're new to us, let this post be your introduction. Read the caption to learn about what the Banff Eco-Transit Hub is, who is behind it, and the projects we have on the go.
🌲 What is the Banff Eco-Transit Hub?
The Banff Eco-Transit Hub is a project to restore and transform the Banff Train Station into an arrival centre and gathering space. The Banff Eco-Transit Hub will help visitors and locals travel around Banff without using cars. Instead, they can ride buses, bikes, or someday, a passenger train from Calgary to Banff.
🚲 Why is it needed?
Banff has over 4 million visitors every year and the number keeps growing. There are over 24,000 cars entering the town almost every day in the summer, beyond its capacity. We need more sustainable transportation to move people around the national park.
👪 Who’s behind the Banff Eco-Transit Hub?
The Banff Eco-Transit Hub is a sustainable transportation initiative from the Waterous family, Banff locals who have lived in town since the 1990’s. The Waterous family holds the lease to the Train Station and Railway Lands and owns Banff Norquay Ski & Summer Resort.
Jan and Adam Waterous, and their three children, Connor, Riley, and Liam, started this initiative in 2016, after becoming increasingly concerned about ecological integrity and traffic congestion in the town of Banff.
🚌 What are the Banff Eco-Transit Hub projects?
• Building the free intercept parking lot at the Train Station, opened in 2019
• Proposing the Banff Railway Lands Area Redevelopment Plan, approved by Banff Town Council in 2024 and currently under review from Parks Canada
• Relocating the Banff Sign from Mt. Norquay Rd to the Train Station in 2025
• Working to get passenger rail services from Calgary Airport to Banff
