Happy Sunday 🌸 dreaming of warmer weather and sunshine after yet another dump of snow in Edmonton 😒 this Hoya used to flower like crazy for me until she randomly rotted from the base one day 😭

Time to clean these itty bitties up and get back to growin
Contamination is the biggest setback of tissue culture 😫 months of work can be erased in days if bacteria, fungi or yeast take over

Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo - one of my OG rare Alocasia that kick started the variegated Alocasia obsession 😅
The price on these have changed so so much! I think when they first became popular they were selling for $4-500 here in Canada. Now you can snag one for around $60 and even cheaper if you want to go the TC route and give acclimating these a try.
They are pretty forgiving when it comes to acclimating but in my experience they’re quite slow! If you’re new to acclimating tissue culture plants and want some tips, check out my video on YouTube. Head to my profile to find it 😊

Wasn’t into plants in 2016 so we are starting in 2021 to jump on the throwback trend 😅
I love looking back at pictures of where it all started! From acclimating my first plants, to losing my mind seeing a new leaf pop out in the first plant I started growing in tissue culture it’s been a fun hobby that’s nearly impossible to explain to people who don’t know what it is 💀

Thank you for selling me my first rare plant which lit the flame of diving into learning about tissue culture
Thank you to for thinking I was cool enough to be an ambassador and for being such a big support these last 5 years
Thank you to my friend Nathan for joining me at every single show whether you wanted to or not, especially the year we were beside the spiders which probably traumatized you for life…….

And big thanks to everyone who has bought a plant from me or just said hi at any of the shows! I feel like saying “your support means so much” is kinda cliche but it’s so true. I wouldn’t be able to do this without your support and trust. I appreciate every interaction even if it’s just a chat about plants and me poorly trying to explain what tissue culture is 🙃 my DMs are always open to see update photos of plants you’ve picked up!

Proud moment when you find a new leaf on your favourite plant 🥲🥹 happy Sunday!

That's a wrap on 2025! Time to reflect on the year - upgrading to a laminar flow hood was a win, losing my sunroom for 6 months to flooding was a bummer, and I've never thrown out so many contaminated plants 😅 (self inflicted sadness)
Here's to 2026 and bringing more amazing plants to Canada! ❤️

🧠 3 tissue culture facts you don’t hear as often:
1️⃣ The ratio of hormones (not the amount) decides the plant’s fate — cytokinin-heavy media pushes shoots, while auxin dominance shifts cells toward roots or callus. Tissue culture media, the gel the plant is feeding off of, isn’t just a one-size-fits-all recipe. Each plant type responds differently to varying levels of each plant growth regular, or PGR for short.

2️⃣ In vitro plants rely on sugar because many can’t photosynthesize efficiently yet — their stomata and cuticle aren’t fully functional. This is why when you de flask a tissue culture plant, it is imperative to remove all of the gel from the roots. Sugar will cause mold growth!

3️⃣ Tissue culture can subtly change plants over time (somaclonal variation), which is why long term cultures are carefully monitored to keep traits stable. Unless, of course, you are looking for a fun new mutation to try and replicate 🤪

Tiny plants. Big science.

What plant do you think I’m tissue culturing? 👀
Doing something new in the lab today and giving leaf initiation a try. I have no idea how this is going to turn out to be perfectly honest - wish me luck!

ALSO - any OG friends here who remember the vented lid jars? These came with my very first tissue culture starter kit back in 2021 and it feels a little nostalgic to be using them right now! Maybe we should start a petition to bring them back 🤭

Timelapse tissue culture videos are my new favourite videos to make, you really don’t notice how much growth has happened until you look back!

These Alocasia Scalprum Aurea are slooooow to grow in tissue culture , but so worth the wait to see a new cute leaf pop out 🌱
