Here is your Weekly Construction Update! Next week, several construction projects are set to begin. Check out upcoming detours and project impacts below.
🏃 On Saturday, May 9, a 5K race will close Queen Street (Regent to Smythe) and the eastbound lanes of Pointe-Sainte-Anne Boulevard from 6:15 AM to 11:00 AM. All southbound traffic on the Westmorland Street Bridge will be detoured to the Smythe Street exit. On Sunday, May 10, the full marathon begins at 7:00 AM from Queen Square, heading north via St. John Street, Queen Street, Pointe-Sainte-Anne Boulevard, and across the Westmorland Street Bridge, which will remain open with one lane of traffic in each direction. Runners will exit the bridge at Main Street and continue on the trail. Expect delays at trail crossings and near the Marysville Bridge, which will remain open. Expect delays and limited downtown access. Signage and traffic control will be in place, plan extra travel time and consider alternate routes.
🚧 Milling is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 11 (weather permitting) starting on St. Mary’s Street at the site of a future pedestrian trail crossing with activated flashing lights, approximately 200 metres north of Civic #1366, followed by work on King Street (Westmorland Street to Carleton Street), Brunswick Street (Northumberland Street to York Street area), Lincoln Road (Vanier Industrial Drive to Adams Street), and Alison Boulevard (Interchange area to Doak Road intersection). On-street parking will be impacted on both King Street and Brunswick Street, with parking on King Street unavailable from early Monday morning, May 11, until the end of the day Tuesday, May 12, and parking on Brunswick Street unavailable beginning Tuesday morning, May 12, through the end of the day.
🛠 Curb work on Lian Street is now complete, while additional curb installations are currently underway in Brookside West on Alex Street, Hannah Street, Aiden Street, and Shannon Street, and will continue into next week. The St. Mary’s Street section will also undergo excavation work on Wednesday and Thursday next week, weather permitting. In addition, overnight excavation is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, at the intersection of King Street and York Street to prepare for the replacement of a section of curb and sidewalk near 400 King Street, with this timing selected to minimize impacts due to high pedestrian and vehicle volumes in the area. Paving will follow approximately two weeks after milling, depending on weather conditions. Detour signage will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians, and businesses will remain open during this work.
🚘Crocket Street will be closed from Long Court to Agnew Street starting Monday, May 18, until the end of August. Signage installation and site mobilization will begin next week in preparation for construction. This work includes the renewal and upgrades of underground water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer mains to support local and upstream development. Surface improvements will include a redesigned street cross-section with two driving lanes, on-street parking, and a boulevard-separated multi-use trail replacing the existing sidewalk.
🚧 King Street, between Carleton and Regent, will be closed starting Wednesday, May 12, approximately from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM to accommodate delivery at the Fredericton Justice Building. Access to Barker House Lane will remain via Regent Street, and access to the parking lot east of the NB Power Building will be available from Carleton Street.
🛠 From May 13 to 19, demolition work will take place on Bowlen Street. A one-lane reduction will be in place on St. Mary’s Street, and the sidewalk will be closed in the work area. Local access will be maintained.
🛠 Noble Street is closed to traffic from Ashfield to Irvine. Starting Monday, May 11, the intersection at Irvine Street will also be closed to accommodate ongoing underground infrastructure upgrades until late June.
❌ A portion of Gibson Street between Ashfield Street and Irvine Street will be closed to through traffic for private development work until Wednesday, May 12, weather and work progress permitting. Work will take place in phases, with intermittent closures and brief reopenings as crews complete each stage. Traffic will be redirected from Ashfield Street via Weyman Street to Irvine Street, and local access to businesses and residents will be maintained.
🏗 Starting in mid-May, stone cladding and stair repairs will begin on the New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot Bridge. The stairs will be closed, and the ramp will remain open for the duration of this work until mid-June.
🌾 Topsoil and hydroseeding will take place along curbs and sidewalks on York Street and Lisgar Street, continuing last year’s work.
