Open Street Sundays

Open Street Sundays Open Street Sundays encourages people to enjoy their City in a new way by walking, biking and moving around safely and comfortably on the street

Open Street Sundays are not about street closures - it is about opening streets to a greater variety of transportation modes and the route will remain permeable to vehicles. Open Street Sundays is inspired by Ciclovia, which translates to “bike way” or “bike path”; millions of people in cities around the world now participate every Sunday and holiday on thousands of kilometres of city streets. The

long-term effects of Ciclovia are safer cities where people can travel with ease, and a new vision of public space. Open Streets could be a transformative, ongoing event without infrastructure costs; which makes use of the existing network of streets and bicycle routes. Open Streets reduces vehicle use, which means less traffic congestion, less wear on existing infrastructure, and improved air quality. All of these things improve the quality of life for all Haligonians. Open Streets creates new economic opportunities for existing businesses and temporary vendors by regularly increasing pedestrian traffic and enabling new sales in new places. Neighbourhoods and communities benefit from the attention and inclusion in the open street network. Goals for Open Streets
• Enable people to explore alternative modes of transportation in comfort and safety
• Demonstrate benefits to merchants of making room for other transportation modes
• Remove barriers to accessing the peninsula and promote a vibrant downtown
• Demonstrate HRM’s long-term vision for an active transportation network
• Make physical activity enjoyable & give people a sense of freedom
Enable and encourage exploration of new parts of the city

absolutely crushed it with the Ice Festival this weekend. ❄️

Gorgeous sunny afternoon on the waterfront, the entire community turned out, and we got to watch artists turn blocks of ice into actual art with chainsaws (which is somehow both terrifying and mesmerizing?).

The inflatable igloo had live music pumping, local businesses were set up along the sidewalk, and honestly? It was one of those perfect “bundle up the whole family and actually enjoy winter” kind of days.

Already counting down to next year. Well played, Dartmouth. Well played. 👏
