Last minute trip down to San Juan to jump on SY Lumina and help get her to Fort Lauderdale and on to a ship bound for Vancouver. Great down wind passage through the old Bahama Channel and then a beat up to the Florida coast. Quick downrig and prep for loading once in Fort Lauderdale and then up she goes on to the ship.

Happy to officially announce this new endeavour I have been working on with Doug Philp for some time now!
The Lunenburg Boat Locker is Changing Locations and Ownership
Doug Philp of Lunenburg Boat Locker and Mike Moreland of Ironbound Rigging are happy to announce the change of ownership and relocation of The Lunenburg Boat Locker to 174 Bluenose Drive. The Boat Locker has been owned and successfully operated by Doug Philp for 15 years and he is excited about being a part of the transition.
Michael Moreland, ship master, founder and operator of IRONBOUND Rigging and Marine Services, has taken over the Boat Locker and is moving it to under his busy rigging loft on the waterfront on the Picton Castle Wharf at 174 Bluenose Drive.
After a few necessary upgrades to the ground floor shop area on Bluenose Drive, The Boat Locker Chandlery will reopen in the spring with a robust line of both traditional and modern marine inventory for all manner of sea-going craft. The aim is to strengthen marine supply services in Lunenburg, ensuring that fishermen, boaters, schooner skippers, local and visiting yachts and maritime professionals to have improved access to the quality marine products they require, and knowledgeable services right close to the harbour.
It will be sad to see John Edelmanns charming emporium head out. But we hope and expect to see John and his marvelous collection of old marine wares and curios back in Lunenburg often, to set up a table of his wares now and then as he makes his rounds to the many out-door antique markets all around the province, as has been his charming way over so many years.
“This is about reinvestment in the waterfront and making sure marine businesses, area watercraft and visiting vessels to Lunenburg remain well supplied for years to come,, as we pitch in to strengthen the working waterfront” said Moreland. “We’re excited to build on what’s traditionally been here and to welcome customers into a refreshed upgraded marine chandlery soon.”

Thought I would share some photos of the sweet new center console skiff local legendary boat builder Dave Westergard built for me at this summer. 18ft long, deep-v double planked bottom of mahogany and yellow cedar over grown hackmatck knees. Pine and cedar topsides and mahogany transom. Lots of the wood was procured from leftover schooner projects in the area; a great use of off cuts and odd pieces that find a final purpose. Tar and linseed for the inside of the bottom and I will finish painting it out with linseed oil paint from .restoration. Big thanks to Andrew from Big Boat Shed for the great space to work in! I’ll spend the winter painting and fitting out engine and controls to be ready for launching as soon as spring comes.

Another week, another big rig to pull! This time the Sail Training vessel of the Canadian Navy, .ncsm.oriole who is here in Lunenburg for a winter refit headed up by . We were tasked with getting the vessel completely down-rigged and masts stripped and stored inside in preparation for major varnish work. Two days of prep with basket work aloft then both masts out in one day. We love working up at the new Old Foundry Marina, tucked up at the head of Lunenburg Harbour. Very protected from any wave action with a large concrete area to hosts cranes and land spars. Thanks to Vienotte’s crane, the shipyard workers, and our crew for the hard work!

Fun couple of days working on Canada’s oldest Grand Banks Fishing schooner, THERESA E CONNOR. Launched in 1938 at the Smith and Rhuland yard, she fished commercially until 1966 and since has been an incredible exhibit at the . She is hauled out now for repair and maintenance and we were tasked with pulling her masts. Great crane work and rigging work by everyone! Thanks to for the extra help

Quick hitch as relief captain on the fast and able schooner . Great 5-day trip with local Maine youth plying Penobscot bay followed by the show in Rockland and then nice sail back to Portland. Great to see the vessel looking so good and well-maintained.

Great week down in Savanah at Thunderbolt Marine kick starting the month-long yard period for schooner Denis Sullivan. Working with the crew, we down-rigged and pulled the jibboom, bowsprit, and windless. Near perfect weather, hard-working crew, and my new favourite shipyard on the east coast made for a very enjoyable week of rigging work. Heading back to Nova Scotia to get our local spring work underway and will head back to re-rig once deck and spar work is nearing completion.

We got hired to help with a funny publicity stunt for Petro Canada new ‘Orange Store.’ The idea was for a giant orange to arrive into Halifax by a wooden boat. Ok, we can do that. Early April? July would be better but sure. We hired out a new Westergard 20 center console skiff lapstrake yellow cedar on hackmatack frames. Perfect boat for the job. Had to hire the pros over to help with an extra support boat. Was a fun and different job for us .

New bowsprit and foreboom for SILVA, shaped by from Douglas fir. We are using our dry and dust free shop to apply coatings of Deks Olje. We applied about 8 coats of the D1 oil over 3 days and now building up the D2 varnish coats, 1 per day. Only 2 coats of D2 on but already there is really nice layer of varnish built up due to all the oil that soaked in. We will aim to add 3-4 more coats of varnish so about one week total to have these spars fully coated. I think this is one of the easiest, quickest, and a very durable coating system for spars when a high-end yacht varnish is not an option.

Another great hitch as captain on DENIS SULLIVAN sailing the waters of St Croix, Culebra, Vieques, St John. Near perfect weather, fun crew, and beautiful anchorages. Hard to beat sail training on a wooden schooner in the Caribbean!!

Great day today stepping all 3 masts on Spirit of Bermuda. Perfect weather, great crew, and a smooth crane operator from Vienotte’s cranes made the job go fun and easy. The main mast is 100 ft long but only weighs about 3500lbs as it’s made from carbon fiber. Getting the rake right can be a trick but knowing where the masts center of gravity is from the designers helped a lot. (It’s surprisingly low, 25 ft from deck for the main mast!). We had all 3 masts stepped in 2.5 hrs then spent the rest of the day setting up the rig, leading running rigging, etc.
