The First Motel, The Milestone Mo-Tel.

As automobiles became more popular in the early part of the 20th century more and more average Americans began to travel to destinations outside of their own town. However, poor roads, slower speeds and less reliable automobiles meant that a 400 mile trip, like Los Angeles to San Francisco could take multiple days. These longer trips required an overnight stay and travelers looked for auto camps to pitch tents, or sleep in their automobile. This inspired many entrepreneurs to create overnight lodging that was a combination of the convenience of a campground with the comforts and respectability of a hotel and this inspired the creation of the Motel.
The Milestone Mo-Tel, located in San Luis Obispo, Ca. was the first motel in the world and opened on December 12, 1925. Arthur Heineman and his brother Alfred created the word Mo-Tel by combining the words motor and hotel. It originally charged $1.25 per night per room, and the concept quickly caught on. The Milestone Motel closed in 1991.

Birding - Morro Bay
A couple of local birds we caught on a country drive along Bernardo Creek road in early February:
The American Kestrel is sitting on the utility pole, and the little guy on the barbed wire is a Say's Phoebe.

Santa Lucia Mountain creekside drives
One of the treasures of the Morro Bay area is the abundance of long, quiet, country roads which meander up into the Santa Lucia mountain Range. Cambria Creek Road, Santa Rosa Rd, and Bernardo Creek Rd are among the many along the coast. We love to throw our binoculars in the tow car and head out to birdwatch and enjoy the day.

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary - Pacific Grove, CA

Well... I got a picture of ONE butterfly!
When we stopped here in mid-January, there should have been hundreds more. Maybe there were, but we just didn't see them. We did see about 30 or so, cruising around the park and the neighboring back yards.
We learned that the butterflies which return next year will be four generations later than this group! They disperse around North America, but return to Central California and the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico each winter.

Night time stroll in Carmel

We got in to Carmel just as the sun set. Too tired to change for dinner, we had DoorDash deliver some delicious lamb skewers instead. A stroll through the village was a nice way to end the day.

Big Sur - Finally Reopened!
For the past two years a portion of the Pacific Coast HIghway has been closed due to a massive landslide. In early January, we heard that the road finally reopened, and we jumped at the chance to take a drive up to Carmel/Monterey before another storm knocked out the road again!
At the turnout just south of the slide, we met a local family who took advantage of the re-opening -- The little girls were selling "Landslide Lemonade" out of the back of thier mom's pickup! We bought the last glass and it was fantastic!

Pier cruise - Cayucos
Mid-day walk into the village for fish and chips and a stroll down the pier... Cayucos is such a cool little beach town!
