We have had a busy week at Bear Creek Stables.
About 10 am Monday we received notification that we had a new addition in our paddock. We hurried home to find “BEAR CREEKS GARNET” made his debut with no complications on his entrance, Tattoo is a great mother, all was good, Garnet was up and drinking and romping around.
We then observed he had some contracted tendon issues and closer inspection revealed a serious abdominal hernia.
Our vet was summoned to evaluate the issue and discuss our options for repair. It was determined that surgery was the best option for optimal results.
At less than 24 hours old, Garnet along with Tattoo were on their way to Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College.
Wednesday he underwent surgery to correct the hernia, umbilical issues along with castration while he was on the table.
He made the trip back home Saturday after 4 days of poking, prodding and a whole lotta hugs and cuddles by the amazing team at the college.
We believe he was a bit of a celebrity, as they indicated that mules don’t typically find their way to the college for care. The team leader and primary care giver said he had been there 8 years and had never seen a mule come in.
Garnet will be on stall rest for a while longer before he can get too active. Which will give us great opportunity to make him very social!
Watch for Garnet aka “Lucky” at future functions, hopefully he will have healed up and made a complete recovery in time for hugs at the BRIGDEN FALL FAIR.
