Do you care about what happens in Stratford?

Applications are open right now for the Town's volunteer committees, and if you've ever looked at something going on in town and wished you had a say, this is one of the most direct ways to get one.

There's something for just about every interest. Infrastructure looks at roads, traffic and parking. Planning, Development & Heritage works on the Official Plan and zoning. Safety Services covers policing, fire, transit and street lights. Recreation, Culture & Events helps shape the programs and events we all go to. There's also Finance & Technology, Sustainability, Heritage, Diversity and Inclusion, the Seniors Complex, and more.

I've served on the Planning, Development & Heritage Committee for the last two years, and it's been a wonderful way to engage with and give back to the community. You get to see how decisions in town actually come together, and you meet a lot of great people who care about Stratford as much as you do.

Any Stratford resident can apply and no experience is needed. Standing committees meet about once a month, and the term runs two years, from December 1, 2026 to November 30, 2028.

The Town has a policy meant to make sure committees represent the whole community, but that only works if the whole community applies. That means renters and owners, young families and retirees, people who just moved here and people who've been here for decades. If the same few names apply every term, we only ever hear those voices.

So if you care about this town, put your name in. Even current members need to reapply. The deadline is 12 noon on Monday, October 26.

Are e-bikes and e-scooters the future of getting around Stratford, or a danger on our streets? Honestly, I think they're both.

They're everywhere around town now, and I've seen some ridden in ways that made me nervous, flying down sidewalks, weaving through neighbourhoods at speed, and some ridden by kids who look much too young to be handling something that fast. Some of them look a lot more like dirtbikes than bicycles, like the one in this photo. Whether you're walking, on a regular bike, or behind the wheel, it can be scary to share the road with them. A lot of what I've seen isn't legal, but it's almost impossible to enforce, by the time anyone notices they're long gone.

At the same time, they're an amazing piece of technology. With the cost of vehicles and gas continuing to climb, an e-bike or scooter can be a cheap, practical way to get to work, school, or the grocery store. For a family, it can mean not needing a second car. For a teenager, it can mean getting to a part-time job without a parent driving them. Every trip made on one is one less car on our roads and one less spot needed in a parking lot.

Stratford has a better active transportation network than a lot of communities on PEI, but there are still plenty of gaps, places where a trail just ends and you're left choosing between a busy road and a sidewalk. That makes riding one responsibly harder than it should be, even for people who are trying to do it right.

It's a serious safety issue, but it's also a complicated one, and I don't think there's a quick fix. Banning them might feel like the easy answer, but they do too much good, and I don't think they're going away. So what do you think would make them safer for everyone, riders included?

Do you know who's running in your ward?

The candidates for Stratford's municipal election on November 2nd are in. Steve Ogden has been acclaimed as Mayor, and in Ward 2 Jeff McEntee and Patrick Ross have both been acclaimed.

Ward 1 and Ward 3 each have four candidates running. In Ward 1 it's Dylan Cooper, Gordie Cox, Gail MacDonald, and me, Derek Kronemeyer.

In Ward 3 it's Ron Dowling, Steve Gallant, Wilfred MacDonald, and Kevin MacIsaac.

Another new mural is coming to Stratford!

I won't spoil it because the town has not posted about it yet and it might not be finished yet, but I saw it while I was out campaigning today. It was too pretty in the sunset to not share it.

This mural is extra special because it was done by an island artist: The Painted Lady Creative !

Did you notice all the bikes and scooters at Fall Fest this year?

I was impressed by how many there were. So many young people were able to get to an event like this on their own instead of having to be driven everywhere, and that's good for both their health and their self confidence.

Looks like Robert Cotton Park could use a few more bike racks though!

Did you know Stratford has a new CAO?

At a special meeting this afternoon, council appointed John Jamieson as the Town's Chief Administrative Officer, the staff lead who runs the Town's day-to-day operations. He was most recently CAO of Three Rivers, and before that served as a Deputy Minister with the Province. John lives here in Stratford and starts October 14.

Wondering what's planned for Stratford's roads in the future?

A couple of weeks ago I shared the road work happening here this year. Here's the follow-up I promised, the bigger projects from the Province's presentation that are still a ways off.

The one that stands out is a new roundabout where Bunbury Road meets Rankin Drive and Hopeton Road. That junction comes together at an awkward angle today, and the roundabout is meant to smooth it out and take the guesswork out of who goes first. Bunbury Road would also be widened to two lanes eastbound through there, with the outside lane peeling off toward Hopeton or Rankin. That roundabout is also what unlocks the second phase of the Bunbury turn-signal work I mentioned last time, a second signalized left-turn lane once the wider road is in.

In 2027 there's a new set of traffic lights planned for Bunbury Road and John Joe Sark Drive, right by the new High School. It becomes a four-way signalized intersection, with a new left-turn lane off Bunbury and another off Duffy Road into John Joe Sark, and the existing turn lane back onto Bunbury stays as it is. Lights at a busy spot right by the new school should make it more orderly.

Finally on the TCH at Stratford Road, in front of the McEsso, the lanes are being reworked, the left-turn lane to Hopeton is being removed to make way for two through lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane. This will let cars turning right onto Stratford Road flow freely instead of being caught behind cars continuing on the TCH.

And two more intersections are still just under review, with no design drawn up yet, The Keppoch/Stratford intersection in front of the blue church, and Kinlock Road between the Sobeys and Home Hardware Parking lots.

These are further out than this year's work and the timelines can move, so the Department of Transportation is the best place to ask for specifics.

"There is no housing crisis as the data now shows."

"If they preach that [high density is] environmentally friendly, it isn't."

"[Rezoning these neighbourhoods is] just going to encourage demolition of a lot of bungalows."

These are comments made by Stratford residents, as the Town takes feedback on its new Zoning Bylaw. This document will decide what kind of housing we're allowed to build for the next 10 to 15 years.

They're not wrong to speak up. It's their town too, they took the time to be heard, and a lot of what they raise is fair. But right now theirs is almost the only side council is hearing. The feedback so far is mostly people asking for less, fewer duplexes, fewer townhouses, bigger lots, slower growth.

So if you think Stratford needs more housing options and not fewer, homes an ordinary family could actually afford, that side has to speak up too. Because if you say nothing, silence gets read as agreement, and this is all council hears.

The town is taking written feedback until 11:59pm this Sunday, July 12th. It doesn't have to be long, even a sentence or two counts. You can comment at shape.townofstratford.ca/projects/official-plan or email [email protected].
