Travel Tip — Because “A Few Bucks Here & There” Adds Up to a LOT

That little machine that asks if you'd like to pay in Canadian dollars.

Seems helpful, right?

You recognize the amount. No mental math. No standing at the counter trying to remember whether you divide by 1.67 or multiply by 1.67 while the person behind you silently judges you.

But WAIT before you hit CAD.

There's something called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) — and it's one of those little travel things that can quietly cost you money when paying with your credit card. So if you chose to pay in CAD in a foreign country, the DCC usually adds high markups and poor exchange rates.

Choose the local currency and leave the conversion to your card network/issuer instead. Your credit card may still charge a foreign transaction fee - that's a separate thing from the merchant's DCC.

ATMs can pull the same trick.

Sometimes the best vacations aren’t about packing every minute with activities—they’re about slowing down, reconnecting, and remembering what really matters.

Our family of five spent 10 incredible days exploring the beautiful island of St. Lucia. We flew into Hewanorra International Airport in the south and made the scenic drive north to Rodney Bay, where we spent our first five nights at Blue Sky Villas. The location couldn’t have been better! We were within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, beaches, and the water taxis, making it so easy to explore everything Rodney Bay had to offer. Our villa overlooked the water, the views were breathtaking, and the team went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect.

For the second half of our trip, we headed to Yellow Sands Villa in La Toc, Castries. It offered a completely different experience—peaceful, private, and incredibly modern. The pool was absolutely spectacular, and our hosts were so welcoming and helpful that it truly felt like a home away from home.

One of the highlights of our trip was a catamaran cruise to the Pitons. We visited the drive-in volcano, snorkeled in crystal-clear Caribbean waters, soaked in the incredible scenery, and created memories we’ll never forget.

But more than anything, this vacation reminded us how important it is to slow down. Between work, sports, and the busyness of everyday life, we often forget to simply breathe. St. Lucia gave us that chance. Ten days of sunshine, laughter, family time, and making memories together—it was exactly what our family needed.

Unfortunately, we don’t know your work schedule, kids’ activities, or family calendar, so the more details you provide, the better recommendations we can make.
