Throughout our 20 years of serving our church and community, we have been actively involved in fund raising and providing community dinners, including the distribution of Christmas baskets to those who are less fortunate. It all started with my mom, Tina Luciano, who was a kind and giving soul. She helped anyone in need without question. She died in 1995 of pancreatic cancer leaving her legacy to
so many. Joan Yim, her best friend insisted on continuing her legacy in a bigger way and after many years of helping people through our church, she started her own organization, Nonnina’s Table. Nonnina means young grandmother and that’s what our kids called my mom. On January 24th, 2013, Joan Yim along with her good friend Assunta Di Trani, founders of Nonnina’s Table, were the proud recipients of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for our continuing services in providing assistance to those in the community who are less fortunate. Our monthly community meals are held at Scadding Court Community Centre in Toronto. Each month, there has been a vast increase in the number of people who are in need of a nutritious, home-cooked meal. Those who we serve are primarily the elderly and young children. Our Christmas basket program started more than a decade ago, distributing turkeys and non-perishable foods. For Christmas 2012, there were over 250 baskets provided to families who were in need of assistance. This year we were able to provide more families with baskets. On December 15th, we distributed 300 turkey hampers
This year we received much needed help from our co-worker and friend at AMEC, Quinton Jacobs. Quinton and his 2 daughters came out for our Turkey hamper distribution and really got down to work!! Teaching our children early about what is really happening around us is imperative! They learn compassion and courage, 2 things that all of us should posses.
