Témoignage : Au-delà des barreaux, l'humanité persiste.

"Dès mon arrivée en prison, une foule de détenus s'est approchée, tendant leurs bras à travers les barreaux pour me proposer des bijoux artisanaux. Au début, j'étais effrayé, mais en regardant leurs visages, j'ai ressenti une profonde tristesse face à leur situation : ce sont des êtres humains, après tout." - Bouba Yougouda, Assistant Projet PAGOC

Ce témoignage nous rappelle la réalité derrière les murs de la Prison Centrale de Garoua. Face à la précarité, certains détenus développent leurs talents d'artisans pour gagner leur vie et se nourrir pendant la période d'incarcération.

La projet PAGOC a pour principal objectif la décongestion des centres de détention, afin d'améliorer les conditions de vie des détenus. Nous félicitons les associations et organisations qui agissent en prison pour soutenir ces initiatives, en offrant des formations et du matériel favorisant la réinsertion de certains détenus à leur sortie.

“As soon as I arrived at the prison, a crowd of inmates approached, reaching their arms through the bars to offer me handmade jewelry. At first, I was scared, but as I looked at their faces, I felt a deep sadness for their situation: they are human beings, after all.” - Bouba Yougouda, PAGOC Project Assistant

This testimony reminds us of the reality behind the walls of Garoua Central Prison. Faced with precarious conditions, some inmates develop their skills as artisans to earn a living and feed themselves during their incarceration.

The main objective of the PAGOC project is to reduce overcrowding in detention centers in order to improve inmates’ living conditions. We commend the associations and organizations working within prisons to support these initiatives by providing training and materials that facilitate the reintegration of certain inmates upon their release.

🌍✨ Bonne fête du travail ! ✨🌍

En cette journée dédiée aux travailleurs, le RECODH (Réseau Camerounais des Organisations pour les Droits de l'Homme) souhaite rappeler l'importance fondamentale du droit au travail, tel que stipulé par la Charte africaine des droits de l'homme et des peuples, adoptée en 1981 et ratifiée par le Cameroun. 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙦𝙪𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚 𝙖 𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙞𝙩 𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙚́𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙚𝙩 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞 𝙦𝙪'𝙖̀ 𝙪𝙣𝙚 𝙧𝙚́𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙚́𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙚́𝙜𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙪𝙣 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙚́𝙜𝙖𝙡.

L'état du Cameroun a également adhéré aux conventions collectives de l'Organisation Internationale du Travail (OIT), qui prônent la liberté syndicale et la négociation entre employeurs, travailleurs et syndicalistes. Ces conventions condamnent fermement le travail forcé, le travail des enfants et toute forme de discrimination.

Cependant, il est regrettable que, dans notre contexte actuel, certaines de ces conventions ne soient pas toujours respectées en raison d'un climat difficile pour les affaires. Il est donc crucial de créer un environnement favorable au développement, comme le souligne le thème de cette année : « 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗱𝗲́𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 : 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝘅, 𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲́𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗲́𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲́𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗹’𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 ».

On this day dedicated to workers, RECODH (Cameroonian Network of Human Rights Organizations) wishes to highlight the fundamental importance of the right to work, as stipulated in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted in 1981 and ratified by Cameroon. 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨, 𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠.

The State of Cameroon has also joined the collective conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which promote freedom of association and collective bargaining among employers, workers, and trade unionists. These conventions strongly condemn forced labor, child labor, and all forms of discrimination.

However, it is regrettable that, in our current context, some of these conventions are not always respected due to a complicated business climate. It is therefore crucial to create an environment conducive to development, as highlighted by this year’s theme: “𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸: 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.”

CAMEROONIAN CIVIL SOCIETY CALLS FOR HISTORIC ALLIANCE WITH CATHOLIC CHURCH AMID HUMAN CRISES

YAOUNDÉ, April 18, 2026 — On the occasion of the pastoral visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon, the National Consultation of Civil Society Umbrella Organizations released a strategic memorandum today, calling for an unprecedented synergy of action with the Catholic Church.
In this landmark document, civil society leaders emphasize the urgent need to coordinate efforts to address the major crises affecting the nation, including persistent poverty, insecurity in conflict-affected regions, and climate vulnerabilities. While the Holy Father himself praised the vital role of civil society upon his arrival in Yaoundé, the signatories are advocating for a transition from fragmented interventions to a genuine communion of forces.
Key Highlights of the Memorandum:
• A Shared Vision: The Church and civil society serve the same vulnerable populations, including refugees, detainees, and impoverished rural communities.
• Concrete Petitions: A request for a special Apostolic Exhortation on the role of civil society in Africa and the strengthening of the local Caritas network.
• Financial Leverage: A proposal to establish a "Basket Fund" with Christian donors to support joint priorities such as inclusive education and peace building.
"At this historic moment, faith and professionalism must unite. We are convinced that the Catholic Church can act as a catalyst for structured social action to restore human dignity in Cameroon," stated representatives of the seven signatory umbrella organizations.
The Consultation invites the media and development partners to support this dynamic initiative, which aims to professionalize and amplify the impact of social aid on a national scale.
