Neo San is running a pilot with the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) - a body whose work in waste-management has been more than commendable. Unending perseverance over the years has enabled some of the best segregation and collection processes. They separate items in so many ways, that it allows the right kind of handling - recycling, composting, re-purposing or Incinerating.
After some initial hurdles, the team at CCP started using the Neo-X machine at Panjim, where the idea was not to handle all its waste, but only to understand the systems that currently exist. From interacting with the on-ground staff, to the supervisors and active citizen community - Neo San has been able to build a successful pilot which is impacting the disposal of reject-sanitary waste each day. This was made possible with the help of , who was running the facility when we began. Thank you also to Global Shapers community - https://www.globalshapers.org/, for funding and supporting this pilot project.
The women workers who segregate this waste at the facility are now given corn-starch bags for the sanitary waste - to avoid direct contact and for easier waste identification. They now have a tangible and clear local solution which can help avoid tonnes of CO2 that would be generated each day from transporting this waste to a cement factory in Karnataka.
The plan is to expand the use of these localised machines across Goa, until our larger units are placed in each MRF, handling a tonne of waste per day. Similar pilots are run with facilities in Karnataka, Gujarat, and Jamshedpur (Tata).
