What are shipping labels and how do they work?
If you run a shipping deparment, Etsy store or small retail business, you'll need shipping labels, and if you're just starting to build an e-commerce business, you may be worried about making your first sale.
While they may not seem like a big deal, labels are an important factor in how your product gets from you to its final destination.
What is a shipping label? Let's start by answering the most important question: What is a shipping label?
Whether it is a USPS shipping label, UPS shipping label, or FedEx shipping label, all shipping labels will contain this information.
1. sender's name and shipping address
2. Recipient's name and shipping address
3. destination of the package
4. shipping class (priority, air, next day, etc.)
5. barcode for tracking and routing information
Labels
The size of the label is important when shipping. It needs to be large enough to contain all the correct information needed for the carrier to send, including the barcode that must be scannable.
The industry standard size for shipping labels is 4 x 6.
This means the label is 4 inches wide and 6 inches long.
All major carriers support these shipping labels, so we recommend using them for your business.
Depending on the printer, you can purchase either roll labels or folded labels.
Both are available in our standard 4 x 6 industrial size.
If you choose roll labels, you will need to use labels with a 1-inch core to fit your desktop thermal printer.
Folded labels are also a good choice because they stack easily behind the printer and fold up after printing for easier cleanup.
