FOB Does Not Mean “The Supplier Handles Everything”
For U.S. and Canadian importers, choosing FOB can give you more
control over the main freight and destination arrangements. But that
control only works when the handover details are fixed before the
cargo is booked.
A common problem begins when the supplier says the order is ready, but
the importer has not yet confirmed:
• The legal consignee name and address
• The notify party shown on the transport document
• The destination customs broker
• The destination port or airport contact
• Whether the release instructions match the importer’s process
If these details change after the booking or document draft, the
shipment may require corrections at the worst possible time.
A cleaner handover separates responsibilities early:
Supplier: confirms cargo readiness, product details, invoice, packing
list, and export-related product information.

handover, document checks, and the bill of lading or air waybill
draft.
Importer: nominates the broker and destination partners, confirms
consignee data, and approves the document draft before departure.
Customs broker: confirms the clearance information and documents
required for the specific U.S. or Canadian import.
