Many people wonder: ocean-going cargo ships require frequent rust removal and maintenance. Since carbon steel is prone to rust, why not simply use stainless steel for the hull? π’
Core reasons:
π Significant cost difference: Stainless steel is far more expensive than marine carbon steel. The sheer volume of steel plates on a 10,000-ton cargo ship's hull would drastically increase shipbuilding investment, making it extremely uneconomical.
π Corrosion traps in the seawater environment: Seawater is rich in chloride ions, making 304/316L stainless steel prone to hidden pitting corrosion. Initially, this is difficult to detect with the naked eye, but once discovered, it can easily lead to perforation of the steel plate, posing a higher risk than the uniform corrosion of carbon steel.
π Construction and electrochemical challenges: Stainless steel welding processes are demanding, and construction cycles are longer. The hull, combined with propellers and various copper pipes, is highly susceptible to electrochemical corrosion, making existing cathodic protection systems incompatible.
Therefore, the industry mainstream still uses marine carbon steel with an anti-corrosion coating. Once the protective paint on the hull and deck wears down or is damaged by impacts, rust spreads rapidly, making regular rust removal and repainting essential maintenance procedures.
