Hi, regarding the DDP service based on cubic meters of ocean freight recently launched by Titan Express, many friends who have never cooperated with us have a lot of confusion about our services and prices.
Here, I will explain the significant differences between the two.
Port to Port vs DDP: Understanding the Key Differences in International Shipping
In international trade, choosing the right shipping method affects not only cost but also delivery efficiency, customs clearance responsibility, and customer experience. Many customers often ask: "Why is Port to Port so cheap, while DDP is much more expensive?"
This article clearly explains the differences between these two common shipping terms to help you make a better decision.
What is "Port to Port"❓❓
Port to Port means the carrier (shipping line or freight forwarder) is only responsible for transporting the goods from one port in China to a destination port in the buyer’s country.
Services included:
Loading at the origin port in China
International sea or air freight
Unloading at the destination port
Services NOT included:
Export customs clearance (sometimes included, depending on arrangement)
Import customs clearance in the destination country
Payment of duties and taxes (such as GST, VAT)
Terminal handling charges (THC), documentation fees, and other port-related surcharges
Inland transportation from the destination port to your warehouse
Under this arrangement, you (the buyer) are responsible for arranging customs clearance, paying all import duties and taxes, and organizing trucking to deliver the goods to your final location.
What is DDP❓❓
DDP stands for "Delivered Duty Paid," an Incoterm defined by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). It means the seller (or their freight forwarder) takes full responsibility for delivering the goods to a named place in the buyer’s country, including all costs and risks—such as customs clearance and payment of duties and taxes.
Services included (full door-to-door):
Export customs clearance
International transportation (sea or air)
Import customs clearance at destination
Full payment of all applicable duties and taxes (e.g., GST in Australia, VAT in the EU)
All port and handling fees
Final delivery from the port to your warehouse or specified address (door-to-door)
With DDP, you simply receive the goods at your location. The entire process is managed for you, with no additional effort required.
Some common misunderstandings about these shipping methods are addressed below:
"Port to Port is cheaper"
While the initial quote appears lower, the total landed cost can be higher once you add customs duties, taxes, port fees, and inland freight. The low upfront cost may lead to unexpected expenses later.
"DDP means I'm being overcharged"
DDP pricing includes all costs—freight, duties, taxes, and delivery—so it’s transparent and predictable. It’s not a markup, but a comprehensive service fee.
"I don’t need to pay any taxes on imported goods"
All imported goods are subject to duties and taxes in the destination country. The only difference is who pays: under Port to Port, it’s the buyer; under DDP, the seller pays on your behalf.
"Once the cargo arrives at the port, my job is done"
If you don’t clear the goods and pick them up promptly, you’ll incur demurrage and storage fees—sometimes hundreds of dollars per day. Delayed action can turn a low-cost shipment into an expensive one.
Summary in One Sentence
Port to Port means: We deliver to the port—everything after that is your responsibility.
DDP means: We handle everything from our warehouse to yours. You just receive the goods.
