Does the first page of your mounting calculation identify both the standard edition and the national basis used?

BS EN 1991-1-4:2026 was published on 30 June. BSI gives 30 March 2028 as the withdrawal date for the UK first-generation adoption, with authority and project requirements controlling use during the transition.

Ask the project engineer which edition and National Annex or parameters apply. Do not assume one transition rule settles every European project.

What should be recorded before a planned repair changes the evidence?

Identify the row and component. Photograph the condition from a safe position. Record the applicable drawing, manual revision and inspection result. Assign each unresolved finding to a responsible person.

Immediate hazard control comes first. A complete inspection sheet with unresolved findings is not a blanket release.

Before calculating the next ratio, do the vertical forces balance?

In our flat-roof foundation worked example, the two sides are 3.77 kN and 2.84 kN. The 0.93 kN difference is an unresolved input or modelling issue. It is not a spare margin to redistribute.

The sequence matters: check equilibrium, resolve discrepancies, then assess the design. No pass result should be reported from these unresolved inputs.

An existing metal roof, now supporting a completed solar array.

At this commercial leisure facility in Southeast Asia, Solaracks supplied the solar mounting structures.

Planning a similar roof project? Share your roof profile and proposed module layout to discuss the mounting scope.

Can the next inspector find the same connection?

Pair a maintenance close-up with a context view. Link both images to the exact row and component reference, then record the date and observed change.

Compare the finding with the approved detail or handover photograph. A photo alone does not verify tightening torque or load capacity. Keep required checks assigned until they are completed.

The illustration shows how to link records; it is not a site photograph or installation detail.

Reading a stainless bolt marking?

In A2-70, A2 identifies the steel grade and 70 identifies the property class. They describe different properties.

The marking does not tell you the tightening torque. Use the specified fastener and the applicable joint installation instructions.
The illustration explains the designation under ISO 3506-1:2020. It is not a Solaracks product drawing.

How steep is too steep for rooftop solar? It comes up on almost every steep roof enquiry, and there is no single industry number.

That is where projects go wrong. One flush system is scoped to 45°, another to 60°, a metal roof system reaches 75° on a specific sheet, and an elevated triangular frame can be limited to 25° when it runs across the roof slope instead of along it. Copying a limit from one datasheet to another is how a roof ends up outside the product scope on paper.

Steepness also moves the engineering. At 60° most of the dead weight acts downslope while the normal force that generates clamp friction has halved. Snow slides onto the bottom row instead of sitting evenly. The wind case shifts from uplift toward downforce, so hook spacing validated on a 25° roof does not transfer to a 50° one. Then there is access: US rules class anything past a 4:12 slope as a steep roof, and once the drop is 6 ft or more the crew is in fall protection. Steep jobs cost more.

We put it in one place. Published limits and what they mean, the geometry of parallel against orthogonal elevated frames, which way to run the rails on rafter and purlin roofs, and a nine step design workflow.

Send the roof pitch, covering, module datasheet and your wind and snow data. We will come back with a hook layout and rail spec, or tell you when the roof belongs on a facade system instead.

Worth asking any mounting supplier: what happens to the roof underneath?

Most published wind ratings describe the mounting system on its own. A line like "suitable up to 60 m/s" tells you about the rails and the clamps. It says nothing about the purlins, battens and rafters that now carry concentrated load nobody sized them for.

Wind tunnel testing at James Cook University measured exactly that. On 1:20 scale models, a flush mounted array on a flat roof raised peak loads on the batten to rafter connections under the leading edge panels by more than 40%. On a 15 degree gable roof, about 10%. Edge modules in the same tests carried large net pressures, around -2.5 on the gable roof and -2.75 on the flat.

Nothing failed in the tunnel. It measured pressure. The point is where that pressure ends up.

AS/NZS 1170.2 does not hand you a wind speed for your site. It gives you a method. Regional gust speed, then wind direction, terrain category, shielding and topography, then the Appendix B solar coefficients for your specific array geometry, then pressure, then members, connections and foundations. A calculation that stops at the rail has checked one link and skipped the rest.

We have written the whole thing up. The calculation chain, the three Appendix B solar clauses, what the 2021 edition and its 2024 amendment changed. And why B1/VM1 in New Zealand still points at the 2011 edition while Australia reads a different probability table altogether.

Send site location, module datasheet, layout and the roof or soil detail. Engineered design and quote normally come back within 24 hours.
