“In public debate, flying is often – unjustly – demonised because of its climate effects. At the same time, rail transport is presented in an overly favourable light in terms of its climate impact.”

Kyiv Airport: Certified, staffed and ready for the next step

A new analysis from our media partner Aviaedge looks at the current state of Kyiv Igor Sikorsky Airport.

Despite the absence of flight operations, the airport has maintained its certification, staff clearances and operational workforce. With 630 employees and the necessary specialist complement in place, the airport says it could begin handling flights if operations resume.

The key challenge is not certification or training — it is the absence of real flight movements needed to maintain practical operational experience.

The analysis also looks at how Kyiv Airport is preparing for future reopening, including potential staff secondments to European operating airports.

Kyiv airport has held full certification for over four years without flights. EU rules set no deadline for restoring hands-on practice after a long operational pause.

And this year, the spotlight is also on the growing importance of Latin America and the Caribbean in global aviation.
