🎃ATTENTION KMC: PSL SEASON IS BACK.

September 1st: Spotted at the Ramstein BX Starbucks today: Pumpkin Spice has officially returned — plus some seriously good fall mugs, cups, and cute seasonal pins. ☕️🍁

So I guess that settles it. Fall is officially here in the KMC. 😂

And if you still want your PSL fix without the extra sweetness, try this little fall cheat code: 👀🎃

☕️ Grande Caffè Misto
🥛 Light non-fat milk
🎃 1 pump Pumpkin Spice
🤍 1 pump sugar-free vanilla
✨ Pumpkin Spice topping
☁️ Extra-light whip

Around 100 calories and you still get the pumpkin spice fix. Still tastes like fall. Still actually tastes like coffee. ☕️🍂

Happy September, KMC! 🍁
Bring on the German fall festivals, crisp mornings & PSL season. 🇩🇪🎃

📸 Already grabbed your first PSL? Post your PSL pic below! 👇🏼☕️🍂

⚔️ LOCAL GEM: A Medieval Tavern Right Here in the KMC! 🍺🏰

We were recently invited to a birthday dinner at Taverne zum roten Baum in Wallhalben, and this place was SUCH a fun local find!

The whole restaurant has a medieval tavern atmosphere — rustic, cozy, quirky, and full of character. Think shields, knights, old-world tavern vibes and plenty of mead! ⚔️🛡️

And the FOOD was seriously delicious. 🤤

🍔 Amazing burgers
🥖 Homemade bread
🔥 Flammkuchen
🍺 A HUGE selection of drinks, beers & mead

🐶 They even have an actual menu just for DOGS! Yes, your four-legged knight can join the feast too — and honestly, some of the dog menu sounded good enough for us. 😂🐾

🏰 THE RITTERSAAL: Upstairs is a private Knights’ Hall that you can rent for birthdays, celebrations and group dinners.

🌲 But there’s an even bigger story here!

At the tavern, we learned about the Waldland-Stiftung, a fascinating local project working toward creating a living medieval settlement — beginning with a village and eventually developing into a small town, castle and monastery.

Even more importantly, the project aims to create training and apprenticeship opportunities for disadvantaged young people and adults, working with local businesses while also helping participants complete their schooling and vocational education. ❤️ It incorporates traditional craftsmanship and experimental archaeology, making history something people can actually experience and learn from.

Such a unique project with a really meaningful mission behind it!

📍 Taverne zum Roten Baum
Hettenhauser Straße 4
66917 Wallhalben

This is exactly what we LOVE finding around the KMC — unique, locally owned places with great food, tons of character, and a story behind them. 🇩🇪❤️

⚔️ SAVE this one for your next dinner out or birthday celebration!

🇩🇪 Day Trip Spotlight: Trier – Germany’s Ancient Roman City 🏛️

Hey KDT Fam! 👋🏼 This past weekend, Margaret, Brent, the Lovelies, and Grandparents set off for one of our favorite day trips from the KMC—Trier! ❤️

Can you believe one of the greatest Roman cities in Europe is only about an hour from the KMC? 🤯

Just about one hour from Kaiserslautern 🚗, Trier is Germany’s oldest city and was once one of the most important cities in the entire Roman Empire. Instead of reading about ancient Rome in a history book, you can walk through it—exploring nearly 2,000 years of history right here in Germany! 🏛️

Even more impressive? The Roman monuments throughout Trier are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier—making this one of the most significant historic cities in all of Europe.

Our Roman adventure included:
🏟️ The Roman Amphitheater (our absolute favorite! Walking through the underground chambers where gladiators once waited before entering the arena was unforgettable.)
🏰 The iconic Porta Nigra
🛁 The Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen)
⛪ The breathtaking Trier Cathedral (Dom)
🏛️ The impressive Basilica of Constantine
🧱 A stroll alongside the ancient Roman city walls

🚶 One of the best things about Trier? It’s incredibly walkable! Once we parked, we explored nearly everything on foot.

🅿️ Parking Tip: We parked at Parkhaus Basilika, and on a Sunday it cost just over €3 for the entire day—an unbeatable deal and a perfect central location.

🍦 No trip to Trier is complete without a stop at Christis Eis & Kaffee for some delicious gelato! If you’re visiting during the Christmas season, don’t miss their famous Glühwein while wandering through the magical Trier Christmas Market. Christis - Eis & Kaffee

🚗 Getting there: Trier is only about one hour from the KMC by car, and it’s also an easy trip by train, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips in our region.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the Roman Empire without boarding a flight to Italy, Trier is the place. Standing where emperors, gladiators, merchants, and Roman citizens once walked is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Hey KDT Fam! 👋🏼 Many of you have likely seen that, under Army Directive 2026-17, a number of installation, MWR, CYS, and other military-affiliated social media pages are being archived and deactivated as part of an Army-wide effort to streamline official communications.

As a military family, we know firsthand how incredibly helpful these pages have been. They’ve been a go-to source for community events, family activities, local resources, and important updates that have helped all of us navigate military life overseas.

While Kaiserslautern Day Tripper is not an official source of military information, we also know how much our community values staying connected.

With that in mind, we’ll do our best to continue sharing local community events, family-friendly activities, festivals, markets, and other happenings around the KMC whenever possible. We’ll also share official public event announcements from trusted sources when appropriate.

Of course, we’ll always respect OPSEC and will never share operational, sensitive, or non-public information. Our goal has always been simple: to help military families discover, connect, and enjoy everything our incredible community has to offer.

As always, if you know of a public community event that would benefit our military community, send us a message because we’d love to help spread the word.

Thank you for being part of the KDT family. ❤️

KDT Fam! 🏺 Have You Discovered France’s Pottery Villages Yet? 🇫🇷

Most people have heard of famous Polish pottery 🇵🇱, but have you discovered the charming pottery villages of Soufflenheim & Betschdorf, France? In our (slightly biased 😉) opinion, Alsatian pottery is every bit as beautiful—and it’s just over an hour from the KMC! 🚗

Nestled along the edge of the Haguenau Forest, these twin villages have been producing pottery for hundreds of years. According to local history, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted the potters of these villages—and their descendants—the exclusive right to collect clay from the Haguenau Forest. 🌳🏺

Today, authentic Soufflenheim-Betschdorf Alsace pottery is protected by a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), guaranteeing you’re purchasing genuine local craftsmanship. Every artisan has developed their own unique style, making it so much fun to wander from workshop to workshop.

🏺 Our favorite pottery shops:

❤️ Poterie Ludwig (our personal favorite!)
Poterie Ludwig à soufflenheim Alsace France
A charming family-run workshop where every piece is still handmade and hand-painted using traditional methods and local clay. We even watched the owners creating a beautiful soufflé dish during our visit! If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind pottery, don’t miss this stop.

🎨 Poterie Siegfried-Burger Poterie Siegfried-Burger & Fils
A wonderful mix of traditional and modern designs. We watched the artisans at work, and they even gave the Lovelies leftover clay to play with while they created new pieces—a memory they still talk about!

🛍️ Poterie Beck Poterie Beck
A large showroom with a huge variety of pottery at very reasonable prices. The displays alone are worth stopping to see!

🕰️ Most pottery shops are typically open 10:00 AM–12:00 PM and 2:00–4:00 PM, so plan your visit around those hours.

🏺 History lovers should also stop by the Musée de la Poterie in Betschdorf to learn more about the centuries-old pottery tradition. Musée De La Poterie Betschdorf

🍽️ When you’re ready for lunch, Restaurant Au Bœuf is a fantastic local favorite (reservations are recommended), and you’ll also find several wonderful bakeries and pâtisseries throughout the villages. Restaurant Au Boeuf

If you have extra time, pair this day trip with the beautiful village of Wissembourg for the perfect day exploring French Alsace. 🇫🇷

These villages are such a unique reminder of one of the best parts of living in Germany—we’re surrounded by incredible places that are just a short drive away.

Have you visited Soufflenheim or Betschdorf? We’d love to hear your favorite shop, pottery find, or tips in the comments! 👇

And KDT Fam… let’s settle a friendly debate: Are you Team Polish Pottery 🇵🇱 or Team French Pottery 🇫🇷? 😉

📍All of the Google Maps links for parking, pottery shops, the museum, and restaurant recommendations are in the first comment below. ⬇️

Hey KDT Fam! 👋🏼 Just a half-day’s drive 🚗 (or a few-hour train ride 🚊) from the KMC is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe… Switzerland! 🇨🇭

If your family loves being outdoors, staying active, and chasing adventure, Switzerland is hard to beat. Think hiking, waterfalls, alpine lakes, gondolas, mountain playgrounds, and incredible views around every corner. 🥾🏔️

Now, let’s be honest… Switzerland is expensive - That’s exactly why we’ve always camped! 🏕️ Margaret is not a camper 😂, but it’s been a great way to experience this incredible country without completely emptying our wallets. 💸

Last summer we explored Grindelwald and the Jungfrau Region. (Calling all Lord of the Rings fans… this region is widely believed to have inspired Tolkien’s vision of Rivendell! 🧝🏻‍♂️🏔️)

This summer we headed to Adelboden, and wow… what a hidden gem! We hiked, explored waterfalls, soaked in the mountain scenery, and one of the biggest highlights was the ziplining park. It was such a fun adventure for both kids and adults, and flying through the mountains with those views was something we’ll never forget.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable family trip, Switzerland absolutely deserves a spot on your bucket list. You don’t have to stay in luxury hotels to experience it, either. Camping has been an affordable way for our family to explore this beautiful country. 🏕️

One quick tip: If you’re driving into Switzerland, don’t forget you’ll need to purchase a Swiss motorway vignette. We bought ours online before leaving Germany, so we didn’t have to stop at the border. It made crossing super quick and easy! 🚗🇨🇭

Have you visited Switzerland in the summer? We’d love to hear your favorite spots! 🇨🇭🥾⛺💙
