This ancient wooden vessel, known as one of the Abydos Boats, was buried in the sands of Abydos, Egypt, dating back to around 2950 BC during the 1st or 2nd Dynasty. Discovered beside the funerary complex of Pharaoh Khasekhemwy, it is among the oldest wooden ships ever found, revealing the remarkable maritime skills of the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago.
Built from narrow wooden planks bound together with ropes and sealed with reeds or plant fibers, its graceful crescent shape suggests it was crafted for travel along the Nile or ceremonial processions. Although far too fragile to sail today, the preserved timbers of its hull and deck still whisper stories of royal funerals, sacred journeys, and a time when the voyage to the afterlife required not only faith—but a finely crafted ship.
