🐟🌊 THE MAR MENOR – A LAGOON WITH LEGAL RIGHTS

The Mar Menor covers around 135 square kilometres and is separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga, a sandy barrier approximately 22 kilometres long. It is a shallow coastal lagoon, with an average depth of around 4 metres. 🌊

In 2019 and again in 2021, the Mar Menor suffered major episodes of marine-life deaths. These were linked to eutrophication – an excess of nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates entering the lagoon, encouraging excessive algal growth and reducing oxygen levels in the water. (MITECO)

Then, in 2022, Spain passed a landmark law granting the Mar Menor and its surrounding catchment legal personality, recognising the lagoon as a subject of rights, including the rights to protection, conservation and restoration. ⚖️🌿 (BOE)

So, next time you look out across the Mar Menor, you’re looking at something rather unusual - an ecosystem that has its own legal rights. 🌊💙

Tip 2: The “First Night” Hotel Strategy

The Tip: Always choose a hotel with a 24-hour manned front desk for your first night, especially when arriving on an international or evening flight.

The Advisor Value: Why? Flight delays happen. Knowing a real person is waiting to hand you a room key at 2:00 AM completely eliminates arrival anxiety.
