The Canary Islands FAQ — answered by someone who actually lives here.

If you're planning a trip to the Canary Islands, these are some of the questions I hear most often.

Which island should you visit?
When is the best time to go?
Do you need a rental car?
Is island hopping worth it?
How do you find a genuinely good restaurant?
And where should you actually stay?

The problem is that most travel guides answer these questions with a generic list.

I don't think travel planning works that way.

The best Canary Island depends on how you travel, what you enjoy and what you want your trip to feel like.

Seven days? You probably don't need three islands.

Fourteen days? You might.

Want beaches? Volcanoes? Food? Hiking? Slow travel? Boutique hotels? A little bit of everything?

The answer changes.

That's why I don't start with the island.

I start with you.

Save this for when you start planning your Canary Islands trip — and if you still have questions, that's exactly what the first conversation is for.

IRONMAN Lanzarote is one of the hardest long-distance triathlons in the world.

180 km on a bike through volcanic landscapes, La Geria vineyards and the island’s northern roads.
3.8 km in the Atlantic at Playa Grande.
42.2 km running along the coast of Puerto del Carmen.

Most athletes arrive knowing the distances.

Few arrive knowing the island.

The wind can be harder than the climbing.
The May sun offers very little forgiveness — and very little shade on parts of the course.

And there’s another detail many athletes overlook:

Your trip doesn’t end when the race does.

If your partner is racing, they’ll be training, recovering, checking equipment and preparing for race day.

You’ll have a week on Lanzarote.

That week deserves a plan too.

I live here. This is what I’d tell anyone planning a trip around IRONMAN Lanzarote.

Most people think they know Lanzarote.

Until they see it from above. Or below the surface.

Volcanoes. Black lava fields. Hidden coves. Crystal-clear water. Marine life. Landscapes that don't feel like Europe at all.

Lanzarote isn't just another beach destination.

It's one of the most extraordinary volcanic islands on Earth.

If you're planning a trip to the Canary Islands, don't choose your itinerary based on Instagram. Choose it based on the experience you actually want to have.

That's where local knowledge changes everything.

There are places you visit.

And there are places you experience with all your senses.

The Canary Islands are far more than sunshine and beaches. They're ancient volcanoes, cloud forests, dramatic cliffs, black-sand shores, crystal-clear waters and one of Europe's most extraordinary concentrations of biodiversity.

Eight islands.

Eight completely different worlds.

If you're planning a trip here, don't just choose an island.

Choose the experience you want to live.

Three people reached out recently with the same question:

"Can you help us plan our Canary Islands trip?"

The answer was yes.

The result was three completely different itineraries.

A couple from New York discovering Lanzarote for the first time—volcanic landscapes, local wineries and villages instead of resort strips.

A solo traveler from Toronto looking for La Palma's laurel forests, mountain trails and some of the darkest skies in Europe.

A California couple returning to the islands years later, dividing two weeks between northern Tenerife and the open landscapes of Fuerteventura.

Same archipelago.

Same local knowledge.

Three itineraries with almost nothing in common
Because no two travelers want the same trip—and they shouldn't.

If you're wondering what your version could look like, I'd be happy to talk.
