🌧️ Could a very strong El Niño affect the Canary Islands this winter and spring?
This infographic explains how intense El Niño events can increase the chances of:�• Torrential rain and flash flooding�• Strong southwesterly storms and rough seas�• Higher than normal temperatures�• Increased risk of landslides and disruption during severe weather events
If El Niño has a significant impact on the Canary Islands, the period most likely to be affected would usually be between approximately November and April, when Atlantic storm systems are naturally more active.
The last major event between 2009–2010 brought exceptionally wet and stormy conditions to parts of the Canary Islands, including serious flooding in La Orotava.
It’s important to remember that El Niño alone does not guarantee extreme weather in Tenerife or the Canary Islands. Other climate factors, especially the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation), also play a major role in determining how stormy or wet conditions become.
The Canary Islands are beautiful, but they can still potentially be affected by periods of severe and unsettled weather. Staying informed and prepared is always important during the winter storm season.
