👨‍🔧 Moving to a new country isn’t easy. The challenge of finding services that are high quality and in your language can be really difficult. So I’m excited that there is a new platform called Localista that can help you find professionals for things like plumbing, therapy, tutoring and massages!

☑️ Localista has a unique review system where every user is required to leave a review after using a service or they lose access. And most of those reviews are collected by phone, so it reflects a real conversation about the job.

The best part of coming back to the US is, of course, seeing family and friends, but here are some silly things that I also love:

❤️ Free refills. So convenient, and so many choices to make your own soda.
❤️ Easily finding shoes (and to a lesser extent clothes) that fit me. I did appreciate this living in Germany and Switzerland also.
❤️ Screen porches and screens to keep the insects out.
❤️ I brought a blanket to the movie theater yesterday and no one even blinked. Weird things are accepted in the US.
❤️ It’s acceptable and normal (although not necessarily polite) to bring drinks and sometimes even food into stores and other places.
❤️ Healthier semi-fast food choices that are faster than a sit-down restaurant but not hamburger fast food.
❤️ Pumpkin spice. It’s not a food, it’s the flavor of the season.

✈️ If you love travel or aviation, you need to try this cute restaurant in Madison. It’s in the Wisconsin Aviation building, which is on the eastern side of the Truax field runway, far away from pretty much anything else.

🍔 Called The Jet Room, it serves brunch and dinner classics while you watch the small private planes take off.

💵 It’s only open until 2:00pm and is cash-only.

Please do not eat paella at a touristy restaurant for dinner in Madrid. I mean, you do what makes you happy, but if you want to really explore where paella is from, the only way to do it is on a Sunday afternoon in Valencia.

The Albufera area is a very unique part of Spain and it’s here amongst the rice fields and farms that paella was created.

If you like unique art and architecture, a day trip to Figueres from Barcelona is for you!

Figueres is the city of Salvador Dalí, the ostentatious surrealist artist and the Dalí Theatre-Museum that he designed is, well, pretty crazy.

Figueres also has the largest fortress in Europe (it’s so big you can get lost!), plus some nice parks and other buildings.

Nuns in Spain have sold sweets for centuries and many monasteries still keep the tradition alive today.

The Corpus Christi Monastery Las Carboneras in Madrid is a group of cloistered nuns that you can buy cookies from.

Come with cash and be able to pronounce the cookies you want in Spanish in a loud voice as you call to the nun behind the turnstile.

The cookies come in a nice box, so they are good for gifting as a souvenir, but unfortunately you have to buy a lot and they are not cheap. However, it’s not every day that you can buy cookies from cloistered nuns, so I definitely think it’s worth your money for this unique experience in Madrid!

🌎 These places are well-known, but I’ve found them to be worth the travel hype.

🌍 Unfortunately, the more popular they are the more overtourism is an issue, but if you are able to visit in the off-season they places are magical!

Well this is definitely one travel experience that makes me nervous.😳

The correfoc (fire run) is a Valencian (Spanish) tradition where participants dress as devils and spray the crowd with fire in a sort of purification ritual. I don’t know much about it but was very glad I wasn’t watching it from down below!
