Spain in August: โ€œSorry, weโ€™re on vacation.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ

The eclipse wasnโ€™t the only sky show.

Just a few hours after the total solar eclipse, the Perseid Meteor Shower reached its peak in the early hours of August 13.

The Perseids are one of the most anticipated meteor showers of the year, and this yearโ€™s peak came with almost perfect lunar conditions. The Moon was essentially new, leaving the sky much darker for meteor watching.

I stayed out from around 2 to 3 AM hoping to catch the Perseids. I only saw two meteors, but it was still a pretty good way to end a day spent watching the sky.

One of the most beautiful sunsets Iโ€™ve seen in Madrid, with the August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse happening at the same time.

I watched it from Alcalรก de Henares, where the changing light made the sunset feel completely different. The eclipse had already moved past totality when I took these shots, but the sky was still putting on a show.

A beautiful end to a very unusual evening in Spain.

A rare astronomical event unfolded over the Madrid region on Wednesday, August 12, as the Moon completely covered the Sun along the path of totality.

I watched the eclipse from Alcalรก de Henares, where totality began at approximately 8:31 p.m. and lasted only about 38 seconds. At maximum eclipse, the Sun was just 7 degrees above the western-northwestern horizon, making a clear view especially important.

For those brief seconds, daylight faded dramatically as the Sun disappeared behind the Moon, revealing the bright solar corona around its dark silhouette. The experience was particularly striking because the eclipse occurred close to sunset.

The August 12 eclipse crossed a narrow path of totality through Spain, making it one of the most significant astronomical events visible from the country in more than a century. Madrid city itself experienced a 99% partial eclipse, while Alcalรก de Henares was inside the zone of totality.

For me, the last-minute search for eclipse glasses, the long queues, the trip to Alcalรก and the wait on the hillside were all worth it.

38 seconds of totality. A moment I wonโ€™t forget.

The scale of destruction is becoming clearer as rescue teams continue working through the rubble. At least 132 people have died and more than 570 have been injured across Colombia, while 188 people remain missing in Cali alone.

Among the hardest-hit areas is southern Cali, where the Torres del Limonar building collapsed, leaving a massive field of concrete, metal and debris. Rescue workers and volunteers are searching the ruins for anyone who may still be alive.

Across the country, more than 1,500 homes have been affected and at least 61 buildings have completely collapsed. Hospitals and other essential infrastructure have also suffered damage, while emergency crews continue their search-and-rescue operations.

These aerial images from Cali show the heartbreaking reality on the ground: buildings reduced to rubble, families waiting for news, and rescuers working against the clock.

In the middle of this devastation, there are also stories of courage and solidarity. Neighbors, volunteers, firefighters, medical workers and rescue teams continue digging through the ruins, hoping to find more survivors.

Our hearts remain with Colombia. May every missing person be found, and may those still trapped beneath the rubble be brought home safely. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด

Colombia is facing a devastating aftermath following Monday morningโ€™s powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake.

At around 7:34 a.m. on August 10, the earthquake struck near San Josรฉ del Palmar in Chocรณ, sending powerful tremors across much of the country. The shaking was felt in all 32 departmental capitals, as well as in parts of neighboring Venezuela.

The human toll has continued to rise. At least 77 people have been reported dead, including 42 in Risaralda, while others remain injured or trapped beneath collapsed structures.

The destruction has been heartbreaking. In Cali, at least 25 structures have collapsed, with rescue teams working at 12 critical sites. People have been pulled alive from the rubble, but others remain unaccounted for. In Pereira, buildings collapsed into the streets, while in Manizales, part of a cathedral tower was brought down. In Quibdรณ, authorities reported injuries and significant structural damage.

Hospitals were also affected, with patients in Cali being moved outside as a precaution. Flights were temporarily suspended at several airports, including those serving Pereira, Manizales, Quibdรณ, Armenia, Cartago and Buenaventura while authorities inspected infrastructure.

These photographs show more than damaged buildings. They show homes, places of worship, streets and communities suddenly torn apart, while families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones.

To everyone in Colombia, especially those who have lost someone or are still waiting for word from family and friends: may you find strength in the midst of this heartbreaking moment. May the rescue teams reach everyone still trapped, and may those who survived find safety, shelter and support in the days ahead.

Pray for Colombia. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด
