Altitude is the one thing that turns a Simien trek difficult, so here is exactly how we manage it:

⛰ Sleep low, walk high — gradual gain through Sankaber (3,250 m) and Geech (3,600 m)
🚶 Slow pace on day one, always
💧 4 litres of water a day, minimum
☕ No alcohol the night before the summit push
🩺 Guides trained to spot AMS symptoms and to turn back without argument
🐴 Mules available at all times

Safety before summit. Every time.

Have you trekked above 4,000 m? How did your body handle it?

The tenth highest mountain in Africa, and the highest point in Ethiopia. No ropes, no technical climbing — just altitude, cold and a long, honest walk.

Our 10-day Ras Dejen trek acclimatises properly through Sankaber, Geech and Chenek before crossing Bwahit Pass and pushing to the summit at dawn.

The view from the top on a clear October morning is the reason people train for months.

Who is summiting Ras Dejen this season? 🏔

October starts tomorrow and the sky over the Simiens is already clean.

We still have a handful of guided departures open this month for the 3, 4 and 6-day treks from Gondar. After that we move into November, which is our busiest month of the year.

After dinner in Gondar, ask your guide to take you to an azmari bet.

A single musician with a masenqo — one string, one bow — improvises verses about everyone in the room. Including you. The whole bar laughs before your translation catches up.

It is the oldest form of live comedy in the country and it costs the price of a b**r.

This is the sort of evening you only get with a local guide. Ask us for it. 🎻

🚨 WARNING: DO NOT LOOK DOWN... Unless you’re ready for the view of a lifetime! 🌍👇
There is a place in Ethiopia where the earth literally splits open, and a river drops straight into an 800-meter-deep abyss.
Welcome to the mighty Jinbar Waterfall—the "Grand Canyon of Africa," hidden deep within the legendary Simien Mountains National Park. Drop for drop, standing opposite this 530-meter liquid curtain as it plummets into the Geech Abyss is an experience that makes your heart race, your jaw drop, and your soul feel alive.
But here’s the secret that standard tourist brochures won’t tell you: you don’t just look at Jinbar. You experience it with all five senses.
🦅 Picture this: You are standing on the edge of the Deche Nedala cliffside. The air is crisp, cool, and smells of wild alpine herbs. Instead of looking up at birds in the sky, you are looking down on giant Rüppell’s vultures and rare lammergeiers as they catch the thermals rising from the canyon floor below you.
🐒 Turn around, and a family of majestic, golden-maned Gelada baboons is peacefully grazing on the plateau just meters away, completely unfazed by your presence. This isn’t a zoo. This isn’t a nature documentary. This is your reality when you trek with Simien Ethio Tours.
Standard travel agencies will just drive you to a viewpoint, snap a quick photo, and hustle you back to a tour bus. We don't believe in rushed moments.
At Simien Ethio Tours, we craft immersive, unforgettable journeys. Whether you want an easy, rewarding 3-mile day-hike through the high-altitude heather forests from Sankaber Campsite, or a challenging, multi-day wilderness camping expedition under the brightest stars you’ve ever seen, our expert local guides handle every single detail.
From professional camp chefs preparing hot, traditional meals to expert trackers who know exactly where the rare Ethiopian wolf hides—we ensure your safety, comfort, and an authentic connection to our beautiful homeland.
Why choose Simien Ethio Tours?
✅ True Local Expertise: Born and raised in these mountains, our guides offer insights no guidebook can replicate.
✅ Tailored Itineraries: From luxury lodge stays to rugged, authentic camping treks.

The rainy season has just filled the Jinbar River to its absolute peak, transforming the falls into a roaring, thundering masterpiece. Nature is putting on its greatest show right now. The only question left is: Will you be there to witness it?
🎒 STOP DREAMING. START TREKKING. 🎒
Spaces for our upcoming peak-season departures are filling up fast. Secure your spot with Ethiopia’s premier mountain guiding team today!

Ethiopian

28/09/2026

If you only ever attend one Ethiopian festival, make it Timkat in Gondar — 19 January.

The tabot is carried in procession to Fasilides' Bath, the pool is blessed, and at dawn thousands of people leap into the water in a mass renewal of baptism. Nothing else in Africa looks like it.

Gondar is THE place for Timkat, and hotels sell out months ahead. We are already taking January bookings, with Simien trekking extensions before or after.

Who wants to be there in January? Comment TIMKAT. 💧
