During the day solar activity was pretty low but later in the evening it started to increase, weather was perfect and we waited 2 hours near the lake for aurora when suddenly it started to dance in green colours within minutes. We were super lucky to experience it, this is why KP index doesn’t matter when you are near Arctic Circle.
Our tour started from Rovaniemi and we drove 45 mins northwest.
Last night was also the first night with below 0 temperatures.
All next days are going to be excellent for northern lights hunting due to increased solar activity and good weather conditions.

👉🏻Here is another reason why travelling to Rovaniemi in late September is worth it, especially if your main goal is to see the Northern Lights.

Statistically, the northern lights are visible almost twice as often during the equinox than during summer or midwinter

Equinox auroras are enhanced by the Russell-McPherron effect, where Earth's tilted magnetic axis aligns with the solar wind's Interplanetary magnetic field to create temporary openings in the magnetosphere for efficient energy transfer. Data from NASA and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center indicate that geomagnetic disturbances are nearly twice as likely during equinox months, requiring lower solar activity to trigger displays while providing optimal viewing conditions of deep darkness and milder weather.

The choice is yours, travel in late September or late March if your goal is Northern Lights viewing.

Monday early morning brings the first -5°C freeze of the autumn in Lapland!
❄️If you are heading out on a late-night aurora hunting tour, watch out for black ice. Driving on summer tires right now is extremely dangerous in the dark and cold, especially when going on northern lights hunting.

Monday morning marks the coldest day so far, temperatures are expected to go lower by the end of the month.

While we were waiting for Northern Lights to show up, we took some photos of the moon and star trails with smart telescope. We even captured a meteor shower while capturing the Milky Way!

Yesterday, the forecast for weather was excellent but it wasn't accurate so we had to find clear skies by our own and then came the fog which made everything harder.
After driving for 4 hours we managed to find a clear spot on top of a hill. Northern Lights activity was average but still a good night.

📸 Captured at 23:23 on 28th August. First aurora storm of the season glowing brightly over the last trace of astronomical twilight on the horizon! This was the first tour for aurora season 2026/27. Our travellers from Italy and Singapore were very happy when we told them they picked a great day for aurora, because they came to Lapland only for this goal, to see the northern lights.
