🚨 New Vintage Alert 🚨

🍷 Anónimas ‘Os Dunares’ Albariño Atlántico

🍇 Albariño, 2025

🇪🇸 Rías Baixas > Galicia > ES

Hecho en España, Anónimas Viticultoras is a project by two women winemaker friends, who happen to love women. Here they make an exceptional 100% Albariño from 40-year-old vines on granitic sands, less than a mile from the Atlantic. With a 10-hour cold maceration prior to cool native yeast fermentation, followed by five months lees aging in stainless before bottling, this wine is a salty spectacle of texture and pleasure. Enjoy with seafood of all kinds.

Anónimas Viticultoras is the project of winemakers Cris Yagüe Cuevas and Maria Falcón. Based in Rias Baixas, where Cris has made wine for many years, and where Maria’s family has done so for generations, they also source fruit from around Galicia. Fresh and elegant wines. In Cris’ words, “Anónimas is a project from the vine to the consumer, a tribute to the anonymous women that should have had their place in history and were never recognized. We collaborate with other women in the world of winegrowers, winemakers, and enologists to make these personal wines.”

🍷 Vinicola Atacalco ‘Carabe de Casablanca’

🇨🇱 Valle de Casablanca > Chile

🍇 Pinot Grigio, 2025

As big fans of Northern Italian skin-contact wines, two star Chilean winemakers - Ricardo Baettig and Carlos Spoerer, decided to start a small side project informed by this style. They currently produce two wines, both of which are made with long skin fermentation and maceration in terracota amphoras brought to Chile from Tava, Italy. One is this Pinot Gris planted in 2007 in Lo Ovalle, in the Casablanca Valley. The Izaro vineyard is 7 acres is planted 100feet above sea level on granite and white clay. The fruit is farmed sustainably, handpicked, and whole cluster spontaneous fermentation in aforementioned amphora. The fruit is macerated on the skins for 3 months! Then spending another 9 months in the same vessel with 4 months lees contact adding a rich texture. The wine receives a light pad filtration before bottling under wax capsule. Nanoscopic quantities are produced, and once again we secured some of this singular PG for you.

Earlier this summer, Vinos Pingüinos worked with friends - Mica & Randolph, on wine for their spectacular wedding weekend on Whidbey Island. M&R have a beautiful property and cabin where many of the events took place, so many wines were needed to keep the party going all weekend. We didn’t get nearly enough photos (except with horses and baby goats), but it was a joy to work with the wonderful couple and celebrate their union.

Because camping was offered to friends staying on the property over the weekend, we chose a selection of canned wine and cider products, and of course our custom Bagnum. It was great to offer a low carbon footprint alternative to wines in glass bottles for just hanging out around the campfire among friends.

That said, we procured Crémant de Bordeaux for the ceremony, and a variety of other wines for the reception, enjoyed by all! Plus, Ben’s fit was cute. 💅🏽

If anyone you know is getting hitched, we’d love to offer our services for wine at your wedding, party, or other event. We can work with any budget.

Continuing to celebrate our latest wine club release featuring Italian grape varieties from outside Italy:

🍷 Ryan Stirm ‘Pajaromas Vermentiño’

🐻 Santa Cruz County > California

🍇 Vermentino w/Albariño & Furmint 2024

Ryan Stirm is one of the winemakers to keep your eye one. He farms the Pajaromas Vineyard in Santa Cruz County himself - a 2-acre site behind the winery just a few miles inland from Monterey Bay. These fertile river floodplain lowlands are typically planted to strawberries, raspberries, lettuce and apples, but grapes also thrive in the mild, Pacific ocean influenced climate. The vineyard was planted to be dry-farmed and the vines are spaced 10 feet apart on a diamond pattern to allow for the most growth between vines given the rich soils found here. About 70 percent of the vines are Vermentino, about 22 percent Albariño and 8 percent Furmint. He chose these varieties as they thrive in the soils and climate conditions found here. Albariño is of course a Spanish grape, and Furmint Hungarian in origin, but go with it – the bulk of this field blend is our beloved Italian friend Vermentino - still an unusual and singular white blend!

🍷 Poe ‘Split Rock Ranch’ Dolcetto

🐻 Mendocino > California

🍇 Dolcetto, 2021

Samantha Sheehan and her husband (label designer, Michael McDermott) have enjoyed Italian Dolcetto for years and were excited to make a California version from Split Rock Ranch - a beautiful, family-owned, dry-farmed, and organic vineyard. When Samantha first visited the vineyard to see the rows of organic Grenache that would go into the Poe rosé, she fell in love with the old vine Dolcetto. She tasted the grapes, and was intrigued by the intense flavors of blueberry, plum, and strawberry - the fruit had bright acidity and crunchy tannin which is absolutely reminiscent of it’s Italian counterpart. Try it with BBQ or a big juicy steak.

Petit Monde is one of our favorite import partners and it was such a joy to celebrate their 15th anniversary at a special tasting event in PDX last month! (Sorry behind on posting…) PMWM specializes in French and Italian imports and they brought in at least 2 dozen of their winemakers for the absolutely phenomenal tasting. We have been tasting and working with wines by some of these producers for years and it was such a privilege to get to meet them in person, practice Italian in some cases, stumble through the few worlds we know in French, and meet some new folks as well.

Special shout out to Quinton who tasted with me much of the afternoon, this kids got a future in wine!

And congrats to Petit Monde for a successful event and 15 years of exceptional curation of imports. 💕

Another stand out from our current Wine Club release:

🍷 Itä Rosé

🧅 Walla Walla Valley > Columbia Valley > Washington

🍇 Primitivo & Zinfandel, 2025

What’s this - a delicious woman-made rosé from Walla Walla Valley? You bet. Winemaker Kelsey Itämeri only sources grapes from sites on the eastern foothills of the Blue Mountains, as close to her family farm as possible - in this case, Live-Certified Les Collines Vineyard at about 1200 ft. elevation, directly on the border with Oregon. Kelsey has a fondness for both Primitivo & Zinfandel, which she considers cousins as they are genetically the same grape, just different clonal selections that ended up with different names. This year she blended the two for this fruity and minerally delight with hints of watermelon, lime zest, and wet rock. It’s straight up joy in bottle form.

What a splendid trip to the Willamette Valley last weekend! Got to taste with wine school bud Jess at her new gig Brooks Wine which features an array of biodynamic farmed Rieslings and Pinots.

Then headed to McMinnville to finally meet in person - César Medina Maldonado of Medina. He makes wonderful Pinots, Chardonnay, and our favorite - Willamette Albariño.

Then stopped to visit another wine school bud Clay in the cellar Ponzi Vineyards. Ponzi has an all gravity fed winery on four levels down a hillside. It was very cool to get a tour and see how it all works.

Until next time, Willamette! 💕🍇

Featured in our 25th Waddle wine club release showcasing Italian varieties in wines made outside Italy. This is one of the best wines we’ve tasted all year and we can’t wait to share it with you:

🍷 Chalmers Nero d’Avola

🇦🇺 Heathcote > Victoria > Australia

🍇 Nero d’Avola, 2021

If there’s one native Sicilian grape you’ve crossed paths with, it’s likely been Nero d’Avola. Is it any wonder, with it’s beat-the-heat potential, and growing popularity that we’re starting to find it planted in unlikely places? The Chalmers family has imported over 70 native Italian varietals to their estate vineyard 2 hours north of Melbourne. Heathcote is hot just like Sicily, so it’s no wonder Nero d’Avola is flourishing there with these vines planted in year 2000, and kangaroos as common vineyard pests. A wild whole berry ferment in stainless steel brings forth a succulent, brambly and supremely refreshing wine. Best with a light chill. Try with Wood fired pizza, BBQ lamb chops, or pork Xiao Long Bao.
