Most people visit Alsace for the wine route and the Christmas markets. And they completely miss this. 🏰
Perched at 757 meters above the Alsace plain, the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe — and somehow, almost nobody talks about it.
The history
The castle dates back to the 12th century, when it was built to control the trade routes between Alsace and Lorraine. Over the centuries it changed hands multiple times — from the Habsburgs to the Swabians — before being destroyed in 1462 and left abandoned for over 300 years.
It wasn't until 1900 that Kaiser Wilhelm II commissioned a full restoration, turning it into a symbol of German imperial power in the newly annexed Alsace region. Today it belongs to France — and to anyone willing to make the drive up into the Vosges.
What to expect inside
The rooms are extraordinary. You walk through the imperial apartments, the great hall, the chapel, the kitchens — all restored with period furniture, armor, and weapons. Every room tells a different story. The views from the upper terraces are some of the best in the region — on clear days, you can see all the way to the Alps.
Outside, the forest surrounds everything. Ancient trees, stone walls, silence. It genuinely feels like you've stepped into another century.
