📍Tour Eiffel, Paris

The Eiffel Tower is not only the symbol of Paris: the most visited monument in the world has many features that make it special! 😉Here are some fun facts:
1 - Until 1930 it was the tallest monument in the world, later surpassed by the Chrysler Building in New York.
2 - It was originally supposed to be built in Barcelona. With its top reaching towards the sky, it would have competed with Gaudi's Sagrada Familia.
3 - It should have been dismantled right after the Universal Exposition, for which it had been built, but things turned out differently. It was spared because it could serve as an excellent antenna for transmitting radio signals.
4 - At its inauguration, the Eiffel Tower was not exempt from the criticisms of citizens and artists, who even came to define it "the iron asparagus", a nickname still in vogue among many Parisians.
5 - The lighting of the Eiffel Tower involves around 20,000 light bulbs, creating magic light shows that are unique in the world.
6 - It has changed colour several times. Initially it was brick red, while in 1899 it was painted in five different colours, from orange to yellow. It has been bronze, the current colour, since 1968. It is repainted every seven years to avoid deterioration and rusting. For an area of 250,000 square meters, 60 tons of paint are used!

📍Aran Islands, Ireland

Located 48 km off the Galway Bay in western Ireland, the three islands offer spectacular landscapes and views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish coast. ☘

The islands, respectively called Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr, are home to a total of 1,200 Irish-speaking people.

Having inspired countless writers, poets and artists over the centuries, many come to the Aran Islands on a retreat to connect with the most authentic and rural Ireland. Other than wonderful beaches and typical dry-stone walls that run through the fields, you will find ancient forts, which make up some of the oldest archaeological remains in Ireland, and countless wild animals such as seals and rare birds. 🐦

If you want to spend time away from the city and recharge, the Aran Islands are a great place to start. We recommend renting a bike and exploring the islands in all their beauty, or resting on a hill and gaze at the Ocean.

⛴ To reach the islands you can either catch a ferry from the Irish coast or, if you want a more unique experience, hop on a small plane from Connemara airport which will bring you to either of the three islands, allowing you to admire the landscape from above as you get there.

📍Florence, Italy

Can you feel an air of Renaissance? Of course, we are in Florence! 🥰

One of our wevelers went there recently and sent us these shots!
The city, located about 145 miles northwest of Rome, is surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan hills, home of villas and farms, vineyards, and orchards.

Florence was founded as a Roman military colony in the 1st century, and during its long history it has been a republic, the seat of the Duchy of Tuscany, and even the capital city of Italy (1865-1870).

During the 14th–16th centuries, Florence achieved preeminence in commerce and finance, education and, especially, the arts. Among the most famous of the city’s cultural giants are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, Galileo, and its most-renowned rulers, generations of the Medici family. 🧑‍🎓

The present glory of Florence is mainly its past. Indeed, its historic centre was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1982. Almost every building there is a work of art, and the splendours of the city are stamped with the personalities of the individuals who created them. The geniuses of Florence were backed by people of towering wealth, and the city to this day gives testimony to their passions for religion, art, politics and science.🎨

📍Walkie-Talkie skyscraper, London

You might recognise the skyscraper on the right from one of our last stories: it’s London’s 20 Fenchurch Street, affectionately known as The Walkie-Talkie! 🗣

Here’s a fun fact about it: before it was even completed in 2014, Londoners realised that when the sun would shine directly onto its side, the Walkie-Talkie would act as a magnifying lens on the street below, focussing the light into a tiny area on the ground, which would reach temperatures of up to 117 °C! Some cars were damaged and people even managed to fry eggs under such a heat. 🍳
Safety measures have quickly been taken and it’s now completely safe to walk beneath it.

But do you know what’s on the top three floors of the building? The famous Sky Garden, a botanical garden with bars and restaurants from where you can enjoy stunning views of London. It’s free to access during the day and until the early evening, after which only restaurant guests can enjoy their meals while admiring the city’s iconic skyline. 🏙

🚈 To reach 20 Fenchurch Street, just take one of the many tube lines to Bank, Liverpool Street or Aldgate and have a short walk through The City financial district.

📍Vesuvio, Italy

let's talk about this interesting volcano at which the splendid Naples extends! 🥳

Some curiosities:
1. Vesuvius currently remains the only active volcano on the European continent, if we exclude Etna which is located on an island: Sicily.

2. Indeed, Vesuvius is technically more than a peak. It is made up of another mountain, Somma. The fact that the two mountains are so close is probably the reason why they both group together under the name Vesuvius.

3. Although the volcano is active, it has erupted intensely only about 8 times in the past 17,000 years.

4. Vesuvius has not seriously erupted since 1944. However, before then, it was thought that it could activate once every 20 years.

To see it, just eat a good pizza in Naples! 😋

📍Arc de Triomphe, Paris

Let's talk french! 🇫🇷

The Arc is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle.
In 1806, Napoleon ordered the construction of the Arc de Triomphe in honor of the Grand Army. Inspired by the arches of antiquity, the monument bears the illustrious names of the nation and houses the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, whose flame is renewed every evening. From the terrace you can have a unique view of the Champs-Élysées. 😍

The arch was designed by Jean Chalgrin and built by architects Louis Robert Goust and Jean Nicolas Huyot, as a neoclassical version of the ancient triumphal arches of the Roman Empire.
The monument, 50 meters high and 45 meters wide, is the second-biggest triumphal arch in the world, after the one built in North Korea in 1982.

📍Hofbräuhaus, Munich

Coming back to Munich! Our wevelers Alex sent us this video from before the pandemic.

The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is a beer hall in Munich, Germany.
It was founded in 1589 after William V, Duke of Bavaria, decided to import beer from Saxony, as he found the local one to taste too bad. ✌

On the ground floor is the Schwemme, the most popular hall as well as the vital centre of the Hofbräuhaus: frescoed vaults, long solid wood tables, orchestras and waiters in perfect Bavarian style ...and of course the beer, rivers of lager! The atmosphere is always very cheerful and lively. On the first floor are the quietest and most elegant rooms, while on the second floor the large party hall offers music and dance shows in the evening. You can also eat and drink outside in the beer garden.
Regular customers have the honour of having their own private ceramic mug, kept in good view on the ground floor. 😝

Attention! Tipping is not mandatory in Bavaria but it is customary to tip if you are satisfied with the service. That's roughly 8% -10% of the bill.

👣 You can reach the Hofbräuhaus very easily by walking in the city centre: you won't miss it!

If you’ve come here from our stories, here’s where the photos were taken.
The mountains in the first pic are in Corvara, Italy — more precisely in the beautiful South Tyrol region, up in the North near Austria.
The second pic was taken in the Blue Lagoon, a small corner of paradise in the northern side of Malta!

📍G*e Aulenti square, Milan

From England we come back to Italy where one of our wevelers recently went ✌

We are in Milan, in the perfect meeting point between the historic center and the financial area.

G*e Aulenti square, and the surrounding buildings are the result of the rehabilitation project of the districts of Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine. The square is surrounded by various truly amazing buildings. The most impressive is the Unicredit Tower complex, the one you see in the pics, with the tallest skyscraper in Italy (231 meters high) 🏙

Nearby there is one of the buildings that most attract the attention of visitors: the Vertical Forest, an architectural complex consisting of two towers covered with 2,000 plant species (to which we will dedicate a post!)
The urban complex is the work of the architect Cesar Pelli.
