Sadly we’re starting to see the real impact of the Middle East conflict filtering into global shipping.

Before anything else, it goes without saying that this is first and foremost a human tragedy. Lives are being lost and communities across the region are suffering. What we deal with in logistics is small compared to that reality.

But from a supply chain perspective the situation is beginning to show its effects.

We’re now seeing containers discharged into completely different countries to their intended destination, vessels rerouting, and carriers declaring force majeure with cargo simply being left at transhipment ports for the industry to sort out.

The way some shipping lines respond never fails to amaze me.

Containers get “dumped” into alternative ports, documentation no longer matches the location, and forwarders and customers are left trying to figure out how to move cargo again. Meanwhile the war risk surcharges, emergency surcharges and operational fees appear almost instantly.

Costs passed down the chain. Problem handed to everyone else.

Once containers start being discharged into the wrong countries and sitting in the wrong ports, congestion follows. That’s when schedules unravel and disruption spreads well beyond the original trade lane.
