The ‘BER’ months… Caribbean style.

September to December can look very different when your calendar involves turquoise seas, warm evenings and a cocktail with your name on it.

September in Antigua, when summer is still very much hanging around.

October in Jamaica, with sunshine, reggae and that wonderfully laid-back Caribbean pace.

November in St Vincent & the Grenadines, for a little island escape before the festive season takes over.

And December? Christmas in Saint Lucia sounds like a pretty good way to swap the cold for Caribbean sunshine.

Four months. Four islands. One very tempting way to see out the year.

And if you ask me, summer definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on good holidays.

SEPTEMBER
Summer’s not quite ready to leave. Warm seas, long evenings, fewer crowds and some of the best weather of the year.

Think Greece, Puglia, Croatia or the Algarve.

OCTOBER
Perfect for autumn colours, quieter sightseeing and some lovely European sunshine.

Think Sicily, Madeira, Crete or Seville.

NOVEMBER
When the UK starts feeling decidedly grey, it’s a very good time to go looking for some proper sunshine.

Think Mauritius, Thailand, Vietnam or Cape Verde.

DECEMBER
Christmas markets, festive city breaks… or escaping to somewhere with a beach and pretending Christmas isn’t happening yet.

Think Vienna, Prague, Berlin or the Canary Islands.

Today is National Wildlife Day, so it felt like the perfect excuse to talk about one of my favourite types of travel: wildlife experiences.

There’s something pretty special about seeing animals in their natural environment. Whether that’s watching elephants cross the road in Kenya, tracking gorillas through the rainforest or spotting orangutans high in the trees in Borneo.

And wildlife travel is one of those areas where the planning really matters.

When you travel can make a huge difference to what you see, and the best destination for you will depend on the experience you’re hoping for.

It doesn’t have to be a traditional safari either. Think whales, turtles, penguins, marine life and some incredible birdwatching experiences around the world.

So, in honour of National Wildlife Day, I want to know…

For me, great travel planning isn’t about picking something from a list and hoping it fits. I’m heading to Cyprus this October, and this one is a bit of a mix.

I’ll be spending part of the trip visiting hotels and getting some proper first-hand knowledge, so I can see what they’re actually like and who I’d recommend them to.

And then I’m adding a few days of my own time to relax.

Which is exactly why Cyprus appealed to me.

October still brings lovely warm weather, but without the intense summer heat. I can explore, visit hotels, get out and see a bit more of the island, and then slow things down for a few days afterwards.

And for me, that’s one of the best things about travelling at this time of year. You can combine a bit of exploring with some proper downtime.

I’m looking forward to seeing the hotels for myself, finding the ones I’d genuinely recommend to my clients, and then putting my feet up for a few days afterwards.
