The Wee Scottage Project Watch this space!

Following our adventure to Azerbaijan and back to the UK in Penelope the Truck (an ex-army Leyland DAFT244 into our 'tiny' home on wheels) we've decided it's time to settle down into our Wee Scottish Cottage, or Scottage, if you will.

The doffing is done - as much as it can do anyway.

We’ve obviously surfaced a couple new problems too in that these dormers aren’t in a great condition - seems like a cheap job lot of bricks was acquired and, well, don’t quite have the longevity they ought to.

We have a plan though, as always, and it’s slowed us down a little more - but dreams should not be rushed, especially if you’re building them brick by brick or stone by stone! We will get there, all in good time 🥰

Busy is an understatement! He’s working so hard on our wee forever home 🥰

Doffing is a slow process, one of patience. The aim here is to take the paint off the house and return it to its stone walls, this is stage one mind - then we need to tackle the pointing 😧 if we get this done this year, and a new roof, we will be happy 😃

Those of you wondering what I do - I keep him fed, watered and happy and manage the finances! Oh and the grass needs cutting soon which is my task throughout the spring-summer seasons and takes around 4 hours every couple weeks - and no, we can’t afford a ride on mower 😄

Enormous thanks to Harry and Tom

Vandals!! And not everyone came away unscathed…

Our dead hedge is a labour of love and home to creatures great and small, so we took advantage of a break in the weather and did some repair work… don’t want to stop the visitors all together of course 🦌

‘How’s the renovation going?’

Well… slowly… but all in the right direction. I eve been sympathetically (which means slowly!!) removing some of the old lime wash / plaster on the inside of the house, starting with our west end gable wall.

Removing the lime mortar from the stone upstairs, working our way down, ready to repoint.

Craig started the resin fixing of the anchor bolts, to start tying in those walls and blocked up the chimney / old fireplace downstairs, Craig’s first ever go at brickwork! All tied in and no vents properly and effectively. We’re pretty chuffed with what we’ve achieved so far, and although it’s slow going, it’s pretty therapeutic work.

Next on the list is placing an order with for their pre mixed lime mortar and some RFG!

And more lime wash removal - we’ll be at this task while yet…

Still no roof quote - but we remain hopeful 🫣

Overdue update - kind of - not loads of news except we have a plan, and hopefully some progress soon on the new roof!! Also lots and lots of bricks everywhere 🧱

Joey is back!! Reno content coming back soon shortly too but this last day before reality required a truffle in the field with Joey and Paris 🥰

A tree had fallen, damaging the wall, so we asked for permission to take the wood.

We repaired the wall, and shared the wood with neighbours who helped with bringing it down the hill.

An afternoon well spent 🥰

(and an excellent nights sleep!)

We’ve been told the roof was only ‘done’ a few years ago but you know… glad we checked it out for ourselves 😬

There was hideous damp in the upstairs when we bought it so knew something was up but to be held on by hope and wishes was a little more than we anticipated.

We’ve also planted a little old rescued Christmas tree in the boundary… and a pear tree where we dig up a root ball from a who knows what hedge - here’s hoping they flourish here.

Craig’s Christmas present arrived, then was promptly returned as it had been opened and parts were missing which was annoying but my new bread tin arrived and we had fresh bread and butter to soothe our souls.

2026 looks like a new roof and some blasting the outside of the house before anything else can really start, so send us your hopes and prayers that we find a money tree somewhere nearby…

We spotted one thing on viewing the house that would mean we needed to take up the floors throughout…

Six months into our ‘little’ project 🤍

It turns out “little” was optimistic. It’s grown into a proper beast — but when you’re realistic about timeframes (and the reality of finding funds for things like a new roof much earlier than planned), staying grateful really matters 🥰
