New EU Packaging Rules Bring Changes for UK Exporter.

New EU packaging rules came into effect on 12 August, introducing requirements that will affect businesses placing packaging or packaged products on the European market.

One of the first measures restricts PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals”, which have been used to make food packaging resistant to grease and moisture. Food-contact packaging exceeding the permitted limits can no longer be introduced to the EU market. This may affect products such as takeaway containers, bakery paper, fast-food wrappers and pizza boxes.

Drought Conditions Put Pressure On European Freight Networks.

Persistent heat and drought across Europe have created ongoing challenges for freight movements this year, with exceptionally low river levels now affecting both inland waterways and road transport.

A prolonged dry summer has reduced water levels on major rivers including the Rhine and Danube, restricting the amount of cargo that barges can safely carry. The Rhine is particularly important to European supply chains, providing a vital inland freight route between major ocean ports and industrial centres across Germany, France and Switzerland.

Further Weather Disruption Impacts Far East Shipping.

Severe weather is continuing to challenge Far East shipping networks, with Typhoon Dolphin becoming the latest major storm to affect operations across the region.

The typhoon made landfall in China’s Zhejiang province yesterday, resulting in temporary port closures and restrictions, while hundreds of flights have been cancelled around Shanghai and Ningbo. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across eastern China, meaning some disruption could remain over the coming days.

Dolphin follows several significant storms during 2026, including Typhoon Maysak and Super Typhoon Bavi, which have contributed to what has already been a difficult year for regional shipping.

New US Tariffs Replace Temporary Section 122 Measures.

The United States has replaced its temporary global import tariff with a new regime covering 60 of its largest international trading partners. Introduced under Section 301 of the Trade Act, the measures apply duties of between 10% and 12.5% to goods imported from economies responsible for approximately 99.4% of US imports.

The change follows the expiry of the blanket 10% surcharge imposed under Section 122 from 24 February 2026. Section 122 allows temporary import surcharges to remain in place for no more than 150 days without further action from Congress, and the measure expired on 24 July.

EU Customs Reform Promises Faster, Smarter Trade

The European Union is preparing for the most significant overhaul of its Customs Union since it was established in 1968, following a political agreement reached by the European Parliament in March.

The reforms are designed to modernise customs processes and address mounting pressures, including rising trade volumes, rapid e-commerce growth, increasingly complex regulatory requirements and shifting geopolitical challenges. At the heart of the proposals is a move towards a smarter, data-driven system that will simplify procedures while strengthening border controls.

Asia Enters Early Peak Season As Ocean Freight Capacity Tightens.

After several months of relatively flat demand, the ocean freight market has shifted into an early peak season, with pressure building across several key Asian trade lanes. Space and equipment availability have tightened significantly in recent weeks, and some carriers are now unable to accept bookings for sailings until at least July from Asian origin points, where rising demand is creating additional pressure.
