One piece of paperwork can hold up an entire food shipment.

And it’s got a name most people outside logistics have probably never heard of.

CHED.

It stands for Common Health Entry Document.

In simple terms, it’s an import notification for certain food products entering the UK.

At JAG UFS, we create these in-house through IPAFFS for our customers as part of the import process.

It might sound like a small part of getting food from one country to another, but getting the right paperwork in place is a big part of making sure a shipment can actually move as planned.

For smaller food importers without a huge logistics team behind them, knowing what’s required can be just as important as arranging the transport itself.

That’s where experience matters. 🐆📦

🇺🇸 US SHIPPING UPDATE

Just a quick heads-up for anyone shipping into the US this weekend.

Monday 7th September is Labor Day in the US, so offices will be closed and some shipments may take a little longer than usual to clear and move through the network.

Food imports come with their own requirements, timings and potential complications, which is where experience and good communication really matter.

A lower freight cost can look great on paper, but if it means longer transit times, extra handling or unexpected storage costs, it might not actually be the best deal.

It’s about looking at the bigger picture and finding what works best for your shipment, not just the lowest number. 📦🐆

How do you get live fish from Japan to the UK? 🐟

In 2024, a UK importer approached us to arrange the air freight of live Koi carp from Japan to London Heathrow.

Live animals bring a completely different set of requirements. We had to work through specialist import documentation, CHED procedures, CEFAS certification, UK border requirements and out-of-hours veterinary arrangements, all before the shipment arrived.

And because the Koi were travelling live, there was a very real time pressure. They had a limited oxygen supply for the journey, so there was no room for unnecessary delays or missing paperwork.

We successfully managed the arrival, clearance and onward movement, and the Koi were imported safely into the UK!

What started as a shipment we'd never handled before went on to lead to further enquiries through word of mouth, and we've since handled plenty more live fish shipments.

A pretty unusual shipment, but a good example of what happens when a customer brings us something outside the usual box. 🐆📦
