๐Ÿชฑ ๐ŸŒŠ Come and find out about the mysterious eel at our FREE talk tonight! The talk will be given by Vanessa Becker-Hughes from The Somerset Eel Recovery Project (SERP).

Eels are notoriously elusive and endangered creatures that are native to the Somerset Levels. They spend many years living in rivers and lakes, and when ready to breed, they travel 6,000 miles to the Sargasso Sea to spawn a single time.

The European eel faces many hazards throughout its life cycle, including changes to ocean currents caused by climate change, pollution, poaching and obstacles in waterways such as dams and weirs.

Vanessa will also share details about a new nature mapping project along the Brue and Axe, which the The Somerset Eel Recovery Project (SERP) has launched in partnership with the Brue CREW.

๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŒŠ Friends of Bride's Mound are hosting a nature mapping and wellbeing event on Saturday 23 May from 11am - 2pm.

The event will provide an opportunity to help with a new nature mapping project along the River Brue, initiated by the Brue Crew and Somerset Eel Recovery Project Recording nature along a river acts like a living snapshot, capturing the dynamic interactions between land, water and life. It empowers communities and decision makers to nurture these vital ecosystems with insight and care.

During the session at Bride's Mound there will also be a guided activity led by Somerset Wildlife Trust, supporting people to experience the wellbeing benefits of connecting with nature, through the โ€˜5 pathways to nature connectionโ€™. The pathways include sensory contact, emotion, beauty, meaning and compassion.

Bride's Mound features the archaeological remains of St Brigid's Chapel, considered one of Britain's earliest Christian sites. There is evidence of human use of this site from Neolithic times, through the Iron Age, the Roman period, the early Saxon era up until the dissolution of Glastonbury Abbey in 1539. Brideโ€™s Mound has long been a place of pilgrimage, and is a peaceful spot for contemplation. The Friends of Bride's Mound aim to protect the site, restore biodiversity and provide a sanctuary for visitors.
